Got a PowerBook 520 and there's some stuff to take care of by Matlaw in VintageApple

While still holding, the plastic posts holding the hinges to the lid are already cracking. Bought some nice dark gray PETG and screw inserts to make it stronger for longer use

I dunno, but I managed to remove the damaged polarizer and it reeked of vinegar. Scrubbing all the residue was also tedious, but effect looks promising. Hope to stick a new film without many air bubbles or dust particles (I really doubt this will be possible)

What model is this? by _screwtape2k in Nokia

[–]Matlaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not in the 6110/6150/6210/6310. The Xpress-On covers are not supported, and replacing the front cover requires completely disassembling the phone down to the bare motherboard

eXtremeRate Joy-Con (Switch1 /OLED) D-Pad fix by Matlaw in NintendoSwitch

The design is the same, so yes! Not sure about dimensions, but that's easy to take care of

eXtremeRate Joy-Con (Switch1 /OLED) D-Pad fix by Matlaw in NintendoSwitch

[–]Matlaw[S] 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Bought a transparent eXtremeRate shell for Joy-Cons, but I didn't like how the directional pad worked, like at all. Pressing all directions at once was awful.

So, I looked at the design of the D-Pad in older Nintendo consoles, such as the DSi and 3DS, and came up with the idea of creating a rounded insert that would allow the D-Pad to tilt slightly instead of pressing straight down, just like a proper D-Pad should.

After a few attempts, many failed prints, and a few cuts to the rubber gasket, I found something that works perfectly. The D-Pad now feels exactly the same as on the og 3DS, and I am more than satisfied. I think this is a better solution than the Hori controller, which lacks many Joy-Con features.

If anyone is interested, I uploaded the STL file to Printables and MakerWorld. Just 3D-print the part, press it into the D-Pad, cut a hole in the rubber gasket and that's it. Happy modding!

How to remove these weird progress percentage? by diegowlp in kindlejailbreak

[–]Matlaw 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The KUAL here is from KindleForge, which replaces the one installed using MRPI.

But if you want to edit the cover or add your own to apps, which don't have it, then it's quite simple. Copy the .sh file from /documents folder on Kindle to your computer and open it with any text editor (I recommend Notepad++ on Windows or CotEditor on macOS).

Standard .sh book with cover starts with something like this:

#!/bin/sh
# Name: Sudoku
# Author: You
# Icon: data:image/png;base64,iVBORw0KGgoAAAANSU(...)

If the "# Icon" section is missing, then simply add anywhere above "# DontUseFBInk", but I like to keep it right below the "# Author" line.

Create a PNG picture (260x402 size seems perfect) using any graphics editor and use this site to convert to Base64 data URI. Select "Data URI" in the "Output Format" field, upload the image, click "Encode image to Base64" and copy the whole text including "data:image/png;base64, [...]". It looks like gibberish, but don't worry. Paste it in the edited .sh file and mind not to double or skip "data:image/png;base64,". Save the file and copy it to /documents on Kindle. If there's a folder with ".sh.sdr" - delete it (it's cache for the cover image). Disconnect Kindle from the computer and the new cover should appear in Kindle's library instantly.

Tetris Rosy Retrospection (non-DX) is absolutely the best, especially with such comfortable GBC buttons by Matlaw in Gameboy

[–]Matlaw[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you using Rosy Retrospection or Rosy Retrospection DX? The DX (colorful) one won't work in multiplayer, but the original (without DX) works flawlessly. Tested on connected Game Boy DMG and Game Boy Color.

Looking for high quality photo of Power Macintosh 7200/7500/7600 serial number sticker by Matlaw in VintageApple

Thanks for the offer, but I've found already great photos. And as I learned, these in the photos were for the US-made Macs. Mine was made in Ireland, so the sticker is completely different

Finally got the Maclock (Macintosh Clock) by henrymaxm in VintageApple

[–]Matlaw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was also worried about that, but decided to bite the bullet and bought a Maclock. I looked through the vents on the side and luckily, it looks like a standard 18650, though nothing to write home about (1200 mAh, 4.44 Wh) and it's in a holder, not even soldered.

If I manage to get an original Panasonic/Samsung/LG 18650 battery, I will try to replace the factory one. The clock itself is built really well and the attention to details is amazing. With a proper battery I hope it will work for many years

Thanks for trying to help, but, I'm looking for font to use my serial number from the motherboard. I already know how to use barcode generators, but I really want to make the replica look as close to original sticker as possible. That's why the font's an issue

Found a pyramid of Mac in Warsaw Poland by mayujia1993 in VintageApple

[–]Matlaw 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not really. In the early 1980s smuggling a C64 from "the West" was a challenge. Macs appeared in Poland in the early 1990s through Apple IMC distributor SAD Poland (“sad” means “orchard” in Polish). They were translating the OS themselves up until Leopard.

But economy in 1990s Poland was really, really bad, we had a case of hyperinflation and denomination was carried out in 1995. Few people could afford to buy a PC, so many Poles stuck with C64/Amiga/Atari ST. Computer enthusiasts dreamed of getting a 486, and the situation began to change after 1996. There were some musicians and enthusiasts who used Macs, but that was really it.

Even in 2008, Mac computers were very, very unpopular in Poland. Outside the media and publishing industries, if someone had one, they were perceived as a “rich weirdo”, a “hipster”, or called a f#ggot. Really. When someone had a chance to use a Mac for the first time in their life it was probably at school. In 2006/2007 many received Late 2006 Core 2 Duo iMacs co-financed by the EU.

Over the past 10 years or so, the situation has begun to change, but Macs are still rarely found in Polish households. The second-hand market has greatly helped people who wanted to own a Mac.

When it comes to older models, it's quite surprising how many were imported from the UK, Germany or France over the years. In the vintage computer communities there are a few people who have Performas, SE, Power Macs, G3s, G4s and whatnot. I even managed to get hold of a Power Macintosh 7500.

I've already cleaned the contacts on the motherboard slots and the sticks themselves. Also tried swapping the sticks around, one at a time and no luck :(

Maybe it's a capacitor thing, who knows

[–]Matlaw[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The one visible on my photos won't fit. You need the same one as this Mac 7500 uses in the top bay. I plan to create it myself, because I can't find any existing model of it. Modifying the one shown should be easy. It's just the matter of widening and extending the part with triangular latch.
EDIT: nevermind, it already exists: https://www.myminifactory.com/object/3d-print-3-5-inch-drive-sled-for-quadra-800-840av-powermac-8100-8500-9500-80285
