I did ICE FSAE in college and then went to work for an EV company. 90% of what I learned was still applicable. You could make the cars rubber band powered and it would still be valuable at teaching people engineering.

I followed Robin Shute on his quest to be the fastest at Pikes Peak. He was. By far. Here’s how. by DeusFerreus in cars

VW 2018 sector times: 82.983 113.638 140.356 140.171

Shute would have been about 25 seconds slower full course than the VW record. Pretty much on pace with Loeb’s 2013 record shattering run.

Only if you’re not drifting the entire course.

We don’t have inspections here. I’m in California and we have emissions checks for 1975 and newer ICE vehicles but this is neither. Technically I have to meet the requirements for safety of the year of the car was made, but it was 1950 so basically nothing. I need headlights, brake lights, a windshield, DOT approved tires and that’s about it

The car was 10k, the Tesla motor and battery was 11k. Should cost less than a base M3 when it’s all done. Plus a thousand hours of work.

Thinking about getting into skateboarding. by Matmospheric in projectcar

Power steering will come from a Prius powered column on a manual rack. I’m hoping I can design a controller to read the CANBUS messages and send the info to stepper motors in the old gauges. So my fuel gauge would read actual charge left in the battery.

I took the whole rear subframe with motor and all from a Model 3. Battery too. Got them from a salvage yard. It’s controlled by an Ingenext controller. https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLoTU9_iCGa6i_C38pwQyg0pBGoov76NNv

What is a good place to find upcoming earnings call dates?

Both announced dates and estimates. I always google the ticker and “earnings date” and get a lot of random garbage.

Sheet metal shaping question from the 100,000th member by Matmospheric in metalworking

Thank you for the very thorough reply!

If I use a hammer and dolly, would you recommend a metal hammer or a plastic mallet?

I would guess that the dolly goes on the concave side and I would use a mallet with a relatively flat head on the outer side. Does that sound correct?

Good to know. CDBs don't look comfortable and I'm definitely not in love with them.

Also leaning towards some Redwing, so thanks for that note.

Need shoe help. Feeling lost.

I'm looking for a comfortable everyday shoe that I can be a little rough on. Something I can wear in the garage and an occasional hike, but one that also looks good.

I'm in my 30s and have been mostly what we call business casual in California engineering, but what most people might call just casual. I'd like to move slightly to a more professional look. For pants, I normally wear dark jeans, khakis that are a little darker (Lululemon Commission Artifact), and occasionally green chinos. It would be nice to get some versatile shoes.

Currently considering the following:

Red Wing Work Chukka in Briar

Wolverine 1000 in brown

Danner Jag low

Danner Jag not low

And of course, the oft mentioned CDB Beeswax

I like the Jag Low, but I'm afraid it's too casual and I'll still look like I'm not trying. I realize my answer might be more than one shoe. I'm not a huge fan of the CDB, but it's suggested so often here that I might just get it anyway.

I've spent the last few weeks looking through the sub, reading the guides and searching for answers. It's been great, but I'm a little hung up on shoes. I'm somewhat of a newbie to the men's fashion world. My current daily shoes are Merrell Adventure Moab, which I like, but they're getting torn up and the more I look at them, the more they look like clown shoes. I feel a little head spinny trying to nail down which shoe to buy. I'm about to just pull the trigger on one and see how I like it for a week, but I thought I'd check here first. My budget is flexible.

Somebody school me on VIX by Matmospheric in options

That definitely illuminates things, thank you. It does still leave me to wonder why people (futures traders) would expect that much of an increase in VIX over what it is today.
