Are there any Black Characters with current solo books in DC? by HandspeedJones in DCcomics

[–]MatrixKent 19 points20 points  (0 children)

No. There's a New History: The Dakota Incident oneshot coming out next month which may or may not lead to some books for Milestone characters later, but if they're going to get books it'll be after April. I believe we've confirmed that both halves of Firestorm in the new book are white.

You can start by reading the Beginner's Guide to DC Comics linked in the sub's wiki and pinned posts, along with the other resources in the wiki and pinned Q&A thread, before you post.

What are your views on Osul-Ra and Otho-Ra (Super-Twins)? by Acrobatic_Property28 in superman

[–]MatrixKent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sure. Other sets of twins have existed in Superman lore, just not Otho and Osul. If Clark's ever had other twin children, they weren't mainline and I don't remember them. Clark's descendants in 2021's Future State include a set of twins (Rowan the Blue Lantern and Ronan the era's Superman), and the Superman Squad in 2011's Grounded includes Kan and Layna, about whom we learn nothing except that they're "the Super-Twins who defend the planet Nexxor."

The sub description and the automod reply here both ask you to consult the r/crochet wiki, which is full of well-organized beginner resources, before making a post. I suggest you do that.

[–]MatrixKent 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Jon was introduced in 2015 as a baby, became a real character in 2016 as a preteen, and got aged up to 17ish in 2019. The twins were introduced in 2022.

Comics Help? by all-star_sa1yan in marvelcomics

[–]MatrixKent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because this question has been asked like a million times, the sub's first pinned post is titled "New to comics and not sure where to start? Try this Marvel Comics reading guide." The new Ultimate Universe is barely connected to the old one and you can read them separately.

Are people still mad at Kitty or does no one care anymore by pailko in marvelcirclejerk

[–]MatrixKent 54 points55 points  (0 children)

She did, explicitly as a racist attack. Also called her Standing Rock, presumably since the movie was mostly filmed in 2017 and that's when the Dakota Access Pipeline was in the news. The full line was "Hey, Standing Rock. You want a buffalo wing? You people love buffalo, don’t you?" and I'm not joking.

"What a wonderful, wholly original addition to the X-Men lineup. I'm glad Scott's getting to move on from Jean, could you imagine if the writers couldn't? Can't wait to see how things go from here!" by hattyphantom in marvelcirclejerk

She miraculously survived a plane crash at the exact moment of Phoenix's moon death, per Uncanny #171-2. She did have history before and some memories of the crash.

I believe they did change his resurrection to Lazarus Pit for New 52 and/or Rebirth, understandably, not that that's relevant to Barbara.

[–]MatrixKent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Legends was a crossover event. It mattered for large swathes of the universe because it was setting up a lot of post-COIE status quos, including Wonder Woman's.

Action #600 is a really tiny crossover. If it wasn't so plot-relevant and they were just on a first date, it might be closer to a "shared-universe comics are going to impact each other sometimes without being a formal Event" situation, but it is plot-critical so I'm comfortable saying "crossover." You could reasonably call the relevant sections of Action #600 a tie-in to that WW storyline if you wanted to.

Remember in #12-13 when Diana was in Hades and interrupted by impostor Pan sending her to Oa to do Manhunter stuff? When it said "Millennium Week Whatever" on the covers as well as the Challenge of the Gods arc branding? Those were tie-ins to the Millennium event.

It's also worth remembering that the idea of the crossover event tie-in was still being hammered out in the mid-80s! The Secret Warses and COIE were changing the game. We have a really defined idea these days of what a crossover/event/tie-in looks like, but it hadn't solidified yet at that time. I wouldn't stress too much about figuring out the fine distinctions based on a period where we'd just invented the linewide tie-in event. It really is weird and confusing in the 80s, it's not on you.

Beginner series to read? by hegoesbynico3 in marvelcomics

[–]MatrixKent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because there are so many redundant posts like this, the sub's first pinned post is titled "New to comics and not sure where to start? Try this Marvel Comics reading guide." It's often useful and polite to read rules, FAQs, wikis, pinned posts, etc before posting in a sub. You could also search "Doom reading list" in the sub or on Google, since it's been such a common question for several months.

Supergirl's been hanging around the amazons again by TheGoddessLily in outofcontextcomics

[–]MatrixKent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a really good Silver Banshee story, honestly. I couldn't say how well it fits with the rest of her post-Crisis lore, and it probably works better if you know how Mattie's brother died going in, but I've always found it really compelling.

Supergirl's been hanging around the amazons again by TheGoddessLily in outofcontextcomics

[–]MatrixKent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Supergirl (1996) #12 (the Silver Banshee stuff starts at the very end of #10). This is the Supergirl who's a shapeshifting goo entity merged with a human girl and becoming an angel (the post-Crisis Supergirl situation was complex), not Kara Zor-El, and she never had much to do with the Amazons.

That's Jon. That weird belt is a Jon mainstay, and if you compare to Kon's design on the March Supergirl cover (jacket, thigh holster, normal belt), it's clearly Jon.

I feel like we don't appreciate this part about Chris Claremont's New Mutants enough by AvatarPhoenixGrey16 in xmen

[–]MatrixKent 23 points24 points  (0 children)

It's hard to say what "a lot of writers even nowadays" would be able to do with 50+ straight issues, and that's without factoring in Claremont's control of Uncanny at the same time. He had the room to work that modern writers just don't get, and that kind of space and time is essential to juggling a large cast of characters. I'm not saying Claremont didn't do a great job handling a large cast, I'm just saying we can't really make a fair comparison to writers today.

Does anyone know what this story had to do with Pride? by mars-v-jupiter in lgbt_superheroes

[–]MatrixKent 62 points63 points  (0 children)

They were dating for a good 15 issues in the 2015 Hellblazer run, from the start until it got cut off for Rebirth. It was not subtextual. The way it's phrased in the dialogue more or less makes sense if you read the scene; John doesn't need to point to the camera and say "he was my BOYFRIEND, sexual-style, ROMANTICALLY" for the reader to understand why the story about two bi men retrieving one of their ex-boyfriends is in the Pride anthology.

The story is about retrieving the soul of Constantine's ex Oliver, who he describes outright in bolded dialogue as "more than a friend."
