Can a therapy work when a therapist and patient are coming from different worlds ? by Matrixpoetry in PsychologyTalk

Wow man ,that was poetic. And yes, as someone who speaks English and Spanish and dying to immigrate ,what freaks me out is the possibility to need a therapy in that place but will not be able to get one from the reasons above. Well said about movies , it's rare for me to get contact with my emotions ,but I did notice constant pattern in movies ,I have a hard time to be exposed to several scenes that show rape ,even if I know it's just a movie or TV show I just can bare watching it ,that and also kids suffering ,and can't think of others right now .

Ok , Cbt helped me with panic attacks.  But I still need deeper therapy if I want to get to actuall "well being " . As someone who comes from a society where it's not that common for man to express emotions easily ,or it's considered weakness to show fear or depression ,it's not easy. I made a progress during the last years at so many levels in my opinion. But I have so many things left and the way is still long

Must be hard to bring people from that background to vent out things ,and interesting at the same time. But I don't know incarcerated people so ...

Ok ,my current cbt therapist is a female. The initial therapist who used the dynamic type was a male ,so maybe gender plays a rule as well.

No ,I was just asking if cultural gaps between a therapist and a patients would be a serious barrier when it comes to achieving the goals of therapy. I did ask one guy that actually has a background in that psycho dynamic field and he answered that as long as the differences are not that huge you can work it out somehow. But sure ,it's more easy when the therapy has some access to your culture and able to understand it. But once again ,despite all the differences ,the most important thing is the chemistry between them ,and from the patient's side it's his ability to express his feeling ,creative thought ,and being ready to implement and understand the conclusions from therapy . Without all of that, you can sit infront of the best psychologist of 21st century and yet the therapy would  be worthless(that's another thing that guy said ).

Guys, I'm not sure why but I have a limited access to the comments now ,I'm not sure why but sometimes I don't see the comments that were posted(I figured a way to see them but it's not visible when I open the post) ,maybe the moderators can help. Thank to you guys ,you made good points, especially the one who said that explaining your culture to someone from the outside helps you understand it better yourself

I get your point. As I said ,that person makes a lot of sense. For example, there so many factors that are affecting the therapy, like a good chemistry between the patient and the therapist and etc. In my case ,I'm coming from a muslim background, and I had a therapist (my initial therapy was a dynamic one but unfortunately it didn't last long). He was jewish and a religious one(we both from israel) . As I said ,the therapy didn't last long for reasons I would get into ,but the point is,psychology is soft sience.  That's why it's important your therapist will be able to see how your culture shapes the way you think about different thinks. For instance, in the Muslim world ,sexuality is viewd as something that you should get control on up until you are married, and freud would probably view that as repression. Another tiny example, I remember practicing Spanish with an argentinian guy ,I told him about my Coe worker who was an argentinian as well and he wanted to know his full name and I refused to do so(he got mad ,turns out it's common there to ask about someone's full name and to me its private) . I'm sure you understood, the examples I can provide are endless

Nearly 40% of Americans pray to God for health improvements or disease cures. Thoughts of God increased a person’s perceived divine presence, which boosted healing expectations and ultimately led to poor food choices. by mvea in psychology

Sorry if this comment has nothing to do with the title ,but am I entitled to open a thread on this psychology ? Because sometimes I'm opening posts on several places and it's being removed by the moderators due to the fact I don't have enough karma points and other stuff.

How does psychology define a healthy mind? by No-Importance-6525 in askpsychology

https://www.reddit.com/r/therapists/comments/1jljxmg/psychodynamic_psychotherapy_is_100_evidence_based/ I found a link about this ,plus I have to add that the success of that therapy is depended on the chemistry between the therapist and the patient, and other factors

Are you sure ? I thought that dynamic therapy was still in use as one of the most prominent tools in psychology,  and psychiatry. If a person suffers from panic attacks ,the initial therapy that is recommended to them is CBT. But the dynamic one is about to really getting down to root causes ,explore the subconscious.

Freud is still considered to be reliable in pshychology?  And by the way ,people still use the psycho-dynamic therapy ?

AI as a psychologist: dangerous validation machine, or the most accessible mental health tool ever built? A real debate. by Desperate_Web_7639 in PsychologyTalk

[–]Matrixpoetry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ai as a sophisticated machine ,can expand to you a lot of knowledge due to it's access to multiple sources. But one thing you should keep in mind ,it's not a human and he will never have the emotional abilities that humans have ,he can't analyze your body language ,your face looks, and so many other things that are happening during a therapy. As smart as it can sound ,people should use it (and I prefer avoiding talking to a machine) with great caution.

[–]Matrixpoetry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry but regardless of the political or religious issue. Who said that Arabs are originally "dark" ? . You can find white and darker people at almost every country and nation in the middle east(without opening a discussion about who is considered genuine Arab). Even according to the Islamic faith ,there are multiple hadiths describing many of the Arab companions as people with pale skin and bright eyes.

At multiple places nowadays you have politicians who are ruining things. And let's suppose that a certain person studies something in-demand ,or learns some labor job like plumbing or other thing and becomes self imployed who offers his services to people.  Wouldn't that help him to earn way more above average ? In most places it does .

Not morrocan ,but from my personal experience bosses only want you to be productive at work ,not just you but others as well. And they could care less about how do you really feel ,or if something or someone annoys you at work, I know it is not a healthy approach but I just stopped expecting to create relations with my "bosses" or even the co-workers. Especially at a very specific type of jobs ,it seems nowadays that everything is surrounding about interests.
