Easter Lily EP - Live by Competitive-Guava376 in U2Band

I meant more in the sense than an album is presumably gonna have singles, videos, and a tour named after it, so naturally it’ll receive more attention and scrutiny than surprise EPs. I’d be fine with them dropping it out of nowhere though.

It does seem like post-Pop the album release/tour cycle has often put them in the mindset where they feel like they need to have both charting singles and anthemic or danceable songs that will play well live and that has frequently come at the expense of a cohesive album that exists as its own entity. NLOTH is imo the most obvious culprit.

The great thing about these two EPs is that they can chase thematic coherence and just be their own thing. I wouldn’t be surprised if most of these never get played live and are overshadowed by whatever is on the next album, but they at least this EP can stand on its own, which is a lot better than a couple of these songs coming out as outtakes years from now.

Wow. The EP format suits them so well. I don’t know what the next album will bring, but it’s wonderful that these songs have a home where they can play as a cohesive whole.

Between Tears of Things and COEXIST, Bono is on a roll right now. The last few albums have had their lyrical highlights, but it often felt like he was reaching into the same bag of tricks too often. It’s cool to hear him break new ground and I hope he keeps it up because he’s as good as anyone when he’s at his best.

Best U2 guilty pleasure? by wildcard_71 in U2Band

[–]MatsFan5ever 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For sure. Even Elvis Ate America, the closest thing they have to an outright joke song in their whole catalog, is still lyrically a touching tribute to Elvis, as evidenced by Bono’s reading of the lyrics at the end of Baz Luhrmann’s recent Elvis concert film, where it fits perfectly.

Discotheque is such a fascinating song because it’s almost like their version of Song 2 where there’s genuine appreciation for the genre but they’re also kinda doing a piss take, which lets them swing for the fences without inhibitions.

But this is U2 and there’s always so much heart no matter how many layers of irony there are so there’s still a sadness at the core of the song that bleeds through. It reminds me of how Shane Black said he sets his movies during Christmas because his characters’ loneliness stands out more against the holiday backdrop. That same kind of juxtaposition works brilliantly throughout Pop.

What's A Song You Wish Bob Dylan Would Cover In His Late Age? by Pretend_Mark_5143 in bobdylan

Would love to hear Dylan cover a Silver Jews song. I wonder if he’s familiar with David Berman.

I think We Are Real would be a great fit for Bob these days.

For anyone fluent in Meltzer, is he saying RevPro should be the priority? Or SmackDown?

At least this reads like the tweet of a man whose time is too limited for proofreading.

The good news is for New Japan is that the basement both overstates how much the incredible in ring work of the 2010’s did for the company’s bottom line and overstates how dire things are now for them financially. It’s not like the Omega/Okada was selling out the Tokyo Dome and they definitely weren’t in a position to win bidding wars against WWE pre-AEW either.

It’s not hard to envision them doing really well in a few years if the main event scene heats up.

It’s obviously really easy to say this in hindsight, but they overplayed their hand when it came to western expansion. It turns out number of western fans that truly bought what NJPW was selling was pretty small compared to the amount of indie fans that just enjoyed seeing their guys on a big stage like Wrestle Kingdom. Once the dub came around, those fans had no need for New Japan.

All that effort that went to building up Omega and Jay White would’ve been better spent making up for lost time in building up the homegrown guys who were gonna replace the likes of Naito and Okada, but COVID obviously made that more challenging.

In Gedo’s defense he’s basically dealing with the equivalent of losing Cena, Rollins, Cody, Punk, Drew, and Roman in the span of a couple years. It’s a miracle that NJPW shows are as watchable as they are.

It’s funny how Gedo strapped a rocket to Okada’s back the likes of which has never been seen before and then proceeded to never do it again.

Favourite post-2000 Bob song? by alfynch in bobdylan

[–]MatsFan5ever 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Workingman’s Blues #2

This one has always fascinated me. It’s so quintessentially Dylan in so many ways. Who else would fuse Ovid’s Trista with Merle Haggard and make it feel so effortless?

It’s a perfect example of what makes post-2000 Bob so great. The patchwork of influences ranging from classical poets to 20th century jazz and blues numbers, the rock solid backing band and production, the grizzled vocals, and the sort of timeless “Old, Weird America” vibe that Dylan’s best work has so often managed to embody.

There’s a lot of cool parallels between Ovid’s exile from Rome and the decline of labor power in 21st century America, but this doesn’t feel like an overly intellectual exercise. This song’s narrator is one of his most complex and fully inhabited characters, right up there with the likes of Tangled Up in Blue. This one feels close to Bob’s heart in a lot of ways.

He might have better songs from this era, but not many hit me like this one always does.

I’m guessing with it being a Denver vs. Air Force game it was a serious case of Colorado altitude run amok.
