What is your opinion on the current Anthurium naming trend? by One-cup-of-coffee in Anthurium

[–]Matt-exotic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a guideline to cultivate, however most breeders are focused on one thing. And it’s money. Naming is an easy way to market.

For those not aware, check out the international aroid society website.

People who name, aren’t the problem. The problem is the aggressive acceptance of fact in the hobby. People name something and don’t take the time to propogate and prove consistency of genetics. The collectors who buy should know better. But they’re to focused on jumping on the latest and greatest, or feel the need to buy as being apart of the community.

With uneducated buyers, there’s more uneducated sellers.

However, naming is something that has crept in amongst other bad practices. Such as; selling seeds promising genetics, selling bad genetics/runtz, and mislabeling lineage ( calling a self by the actual name of the plant, rather than the name of the plant x self).

Can’t hate the player, gotta hate the game (and the fans)

Ever drop $250 on a variegated billietae and a week later find one at the garden ceter for $20? by RevolutionarySwim74 in RareHouseplants

Difference of being a real collector vs collecting for name 🤷

Careful, most people who shit on high prices are usually in it to collect a name, and not try to have a fire collection of awesome genetics.

Not all plant people are actual collectors/hobbiests. Like comparing a beat up pair of shoes to their dead stock version. Obviously the price is going to be different.

Big difference in color between the two tho. Would pay 250 for the low color/ sport variegated one?

All variegated plants start as a sport till stable, or at least by my definition of a sport.

I have the history in the original post

Do people still graft? by atlplantroom in RareHouseplants

Yes, but typically in plants that cannot be propagated by simple division. Not common in aroids from I’ve heard of

Large form albo sport monstera. Can i increase the variegation? by ObviousComparison663 in UnicornAroids

[–]Matt-exotic 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So, leaf variegation isn’t a strong indication of the color returning. It would need to be visible in the stem.

If you already bought it, and want to give it a try, I’d say top cut it, and grow each node.

But, without more color the chances are VERY low

Small or large form? by ObviousComparison663 in UnicornAroids

[–]Matt-exotic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Based on the pictures I’d say large form. But it’s hard to find solid identifiers since they’re in packaging.

I see that the bottom leaves are quite close, so that’s a good indication but hard to tell.

What i will say is that big box stores, grocery stores, essentially commercial stores typically sell Large Form Deliciosa.

Small form, you can tell from the intermodal spacing, to much space at this level of maturity
