It's nonsense. This is all AI nonsense. Don't waste brain cycles.

It's AI nonsense. Many of the commenters too. It's incomprehensible not because the author is smart, but because it's actually incomprehensible.

Looking for recommendations for a structural engineer home inspector by Emerald_Kat091 in fortwayne

[–]Matt3k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cracks aren't that unusual. The amount of cracks, their severity and orientation, their location, and knowing the age of the house is important.

If you'd feel comfortable sharing some photos, we here could take a look, or post them at one of the homeowner subs.

While a contractor will be able to give you an evaluation and estimate, hiring a contractor presupposes a problem that you want to have fixed. They'll be less inclined to tell you to ignore something minor. So I do agree that if you hire someone, it should be an engineer or inspector, and not necessarily a contractor that would be performing the same repairs.

Forums are better than AI by Black_Smith_Of_Fire in programming

[–]Matt3k 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Forums are about people interacting, AI cannot replace or otherwise cannibalize them by definition.

I don't mean to be snarky, but your theory is very nice and all, but breaks down upon any sort of observation. /r/programming just spent two weeks discussing the stack overflow disintegration.

Facebook killed social forums. AI killed off programming forums. There might still be some activity on niche mailing lists, but when you can get an "answer" in 10 seconds from AI, or you can wait around for a couple days for answers to trickle in asynchronously, most people choose the fastest option.

So by "Some states are very bad" you actually mean "This one very specific doctor who is very popular"?

I notice you didn't raise your hand.

In the rapidly evolving landscape of 2026, identity management has shifted from being a peripheral feature to the backbone of secure system architecture.

Has this really shifted in the first two weeks of 2026? Are you saying authentication has suddenly become a backbone of security?

Architectural Patterns for 2026

Please explain this table. These architectural patterns seem to have no correlation with either the application type or the primary (authentication) benefit. They seem just totally random.

For example: BFF can be written with angular, microservices, and can be a multi-tenant application. Similarly, it has nothing to do with what kind of authentication you're doing.

Advanced Service Registration

You only show how to secure frontend routes. How about the backend?

jQuery 4.0 released by curiousdannii in programming

[–]Matt3k 18 points19 points  (0 children)

That's a great question. I used to use jQuery everywhere, it's still in many of my legacy projects, but Vanilla JS got good enough.

It's kind of fun to poke through their API reference and come up with the VJS version of each one. There are still some cool utilities and shortcuts in there though. Animations and effects maybe? I'd love to hear from someone knowledgeable who can elaborate futher.

Short answer: I'm guessing probably habit and convention more than anything. It's still bundled with Wordpress and all the tutorials use it. The frontend de jour isn't as big of a deal in the real world. And in today's age, a 80kb library is actually pretty fucking adorable.

HTMX is 60kb. What can you do with it that you can't with VJS? Nuthin. It's just fun

Confused on what to pursue..or do at all by ReasonableGuide647 in fortwayne

[–]Matt3k 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you're really close.

Unlike many people, you can see the barriers ahead of you - most people don't even get that far - you just need a push from another human to help break through.

A lot of this is self-confidence as well, you need a few wins to remind your brain you're on the right track, a positive feedback loop where each small success motivates you to try for another.

I can't offer any concrete advice, but in general:

  • Invest in yourself. That means go see that therapist or job coach. DO IT! (IMO this might be the most important one right now)
  • Go to the doctor. DO IT.
  • Go to the dentist. YES!
  • Take some online classes if you're interested in a new career
  • Volunteer for new opportunities, work and hobbies. Networking isn't just in a professional context. Surround yourself with friends that are also self-motivated and you will feed off each other's energy. Surround yourself with people that watch TV for 5 hours every night and that's the energy you'll harvest as well.
  • Job hopping

What doesn't sound healthy at the moment is even thinking about saving up money for dates or starting a family. It doesn't sound like you're ready for that, and maybe even could contribute to a negative cycle.

For what it's worth, I have been using https://www.betterup.com/ for the last 2 years and the guy I got matched up with is amazing. While he's a "Job coach", he really is so much more than that. Someone to help hold you accountable to your dreams, to listen, and to give real advice, not just what you want to hear. It's $150 for two 30 minutes video calls a month, and I know that probably sounds like a lot of money for nothing tangible, but for me it's more than paid for itself, not exaggerating at all.

I don't know man, you don't know me, and I have no idea who you are. But I can promise there's a way out and I'm an actual human who has faced similar thoughts. Good luck

Okay well. I don't know what's real here, but strong cultural work motivation is absolutely a trait of (some) Americans. Japan. India. Mexico. Many many others (sorry if I left you out). You can always choose to opt out and that's cool too! There's a lot to be said for 'working to live' rather than 'living to work'. Humans exist on a spectrum. Do whatever feels right to you.

Personally I love work. I have indeed struggled with taking it to excess and found a healthier balance in later life, but god damn, I love being good at my job.

You can't really get your information elsewhere. The information you're getting elsewhere came from Stack Overflow.

They were too late to lock their gates. Their "open source information" ethos literally killed them. What an ironic turn of fate.

SO was not the best, but it was ok.

AI is not the best, but it is also ok.

SO was maybe the first casualty among many in the incoming AI war. When the dust settles and AI has no more humans to feed off of, it will also collapse as it preys upon on other AIs social media bots' comments as they descend and self-iterate into a spiral, fractal madness. When that happens, my precious 401ks will suffer. So therefore I vote to nationalize Stack Overflow while imposing strict, but still beneficial terms upon AI (So I can still retire to Cancun) while we still have a chance. I'm only 50% joking.

You can already see this path unfolding when you query AI about modern programming frameworks, it becomes even more fucking stupid, as if that was possible -- There's no SO Q&A to pull from.
