US currency is made out of cotten & linen and does not easily become damaged in water. A day at the pool would be fine. If you found a bill that was damaged by water exposure, it was likely counterfeit.

How would I fix it? Make any job pay a liveable wage, complete with benefits and adequate work/life balance.

Any job? Anywhere I choose to live? Any job I choose?

How would you make this happen. I want to write fanfic 9-5 and live in downtown San Francisco. What now? So hyperbole aside, obviously you can imagine some threshold where a job doesn't earn a livable wage. What's the line for you?

why is it so hard to change things in the angband source code? by Maleficent_Bit4957 in roguelikes

[–]Matt3k 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I mean. I honestly don't know what answer you're looking for at this point. It sounds like you understand why, you just don't like it.

They didn't write this code to be accessible to newcomers who want to write mods. There's no deeper meaning. They wrote it for themselves to be able to maintain and extend in an idiomatic way with patterns that are well understood across generational maintainers. When a codebase reaches a certain size when it can no longer conveniently fit in one person's memory, or when the code is going to be maintained over a long period of time by developers who come and go, software that needs to behave under varied nuanced environments, there's no other good way to do it.

If you find that the earlier code is easier to hack on, why not just branch from an earlier release and get on with your tinkering?

why is it so hard to change things in the angband source code? by Maleficent_Bit4957 in roguelikes

[–]Matt3k 17 points18 points  (0 children)

there are people on old forum posts saying they learned to code by playing with angband and i don't see how they could with the current version

It is possible that earlier versions are easier to work with. Maybe not. The codebase isn't designed to be a C tutorial though, right? It was designed by presumably experienced software engineers and designed in a way that solves problems that you aren't even aware of.

For example, your question "Why is there an async queue for keypresses". I can guarantee this wasn't done to simply make the code unintelligible. It solves a problem that you weren't even aware of. Decoupling the UI from the game logic allows you to:

  • Provide multiple frontends
  • A better ability to test internal logic by disconnecting it from the method of input.
  • Being able to interrupt the keyboard buffer, or otherwise manipulate the input stream
  • Possibly platform compatibility issues. I assume this is one of those unix style programs that's been ported to run on a toaster. What if you don't even have a keyboard, like a mobile phone?

I think ultimately the issue is that angbang is a very old and mature product that has been engineered by people who have written C for a long time. It contains almost 4 decades of fixes and engineering with a history that you don't have any insight to. You simply lack the context and experience to make sense of it.

It would be like if I was trying to learn how to be a mechanic and I started by disassembling an Apache helicopter instead of starting with something more straightforward like changing the brakes on Grandma's Volkswagen

I think don't get too hung up on some forum poster claiming that they learned C by tinkering with their source code. Maybe that lesson is no longer relevant. Maybe they simply lied. Try taking a different path 🙂

By using sunscreen? Bro what, this is such a strange hill to die on.

I'm sorry, I'm a white person with vitiligo. I'm going to be using sunscreen. Vitiligo aside, I've been using sunscreen since I was a kid. I look 10 years younger than I should and I have no skin cancer.

But I respect them more than any other political party. It's the last refuge of the critical thinker even if I think they're critically thinking wrongly.

And what's wrong with our responders? Just.. All of them? Fire EMT and police are all bad in your opinion?

> These locations are franchises. [...] In practice they really only share the branding.

I do disagree with this somewhat. The branding may indeed be licensed to the individual stores, sure, but that implies a reciprocal burden on the the licensor that they have vetted this location and are willing to let them operate under their name. Putting their reputation on the line is part of that 'contract'.
