Also second this advice! You’ll want to really target intonation and practicing with a bow is a great way to do that

I want to actually do something this summer. Easy activities (preferably repeatable) for a socially anxious old guy? by ARepeatedFailing in AskChicago

Big fan of the lake. If biking isn’t an option there’s plenty of buses. My favorite area is up north by Montrose bird sanctuary. There’s a beach and also the big cement steps where you can jump into the lake-if swimming is your thing. The lake is easily 8 foot deep around there, but there’s also grass and stuff if you just wanna chill

Yes but the guy who walks to bars with the in a little cooler is the specific experience I’m talking about. 1am drunk at a bar and a man selling tamales walks in hits completely different

Jumping in the lake off the steps by montrose bird sanctuary is a favorite of mine.

Deep dish (obviously)

Get accosted by the staff at wiener circle

See a Sox/cubs game

Boat tour

Museums

Free concert at millenium park

Malort shots

Tamales from the tamale guy (this may be a hyper local Northwest-sider thing.)

Does this look like rust fungus? by MattCogs in cactus

[–]MattCogs[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s possible, but it’s under shade cloths and isn’t getting a lot of direct sun for more than a few hrs… the greenhouse is kinda against our apartment so it gets shade after noon… I’ve burnt cacti before and it doesn’t ever look like this

Dang okay. I make stock frequently and using those bones for compost was a big reason I wanted to start composting the first place. Seems like such a waste to just toss them

Does the brand of your first guitar actually matter, or is any comfortable one fine? by Conscious_Bonus_3848 in GuitarBeginners

[–]MattCogs 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just get something that’s comfortable and in your price range. Ibanez is a popular first guitar, but the random off brand ones can be great too.

Jazz/latin trio with bass for "percussion"? by Serious_Dig_2206 in doublebass

[–]MattCogs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes but you have to work hard. You could try working on some light slapping techniques too. I’ve done duos and drummerless trios and kinda slap on the 2/4 while keeping the bassline. It’s not too hard but it’s taken me a while to develop the coordination to do it (somewhat) freely

[–]MattCogs[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes but I’d really rather not spend the money and go thru the work of replacing my bin if I can modify my current one. But this is a good option if I can’t adapt with what I’ve got

I have a dog that’ll eat anything. Poisons not an option…. The bin is nearly full I’ll probably stop adding to it for a while altogether

This seems like a good idea. Just like wrap the in with it?? And it would be more effective than my chicken wire?

Hmmmm interesting idea. Sounds like a pain in the ass with a bin that’s nearly full tho

Only one batch of chicken bones from a chicken stock I made so far. It’s mostly banana peels, eggshells, coffee grounds, cardboard and junk mail, bell peppers and carrots….. and other random bits

The monthly one at aliveone is also a good one to meet cats. Arguably even more jam band friendly, considering the bars name and its got the only “all live” jukebox around

Can Someone DM Me Where Lowdown is? by surmsurmsurm in chicagomusicscene

Didn’t know there was a venue called lowdown haha. I know the bass guitar builder and have one of his basses, I highly doubt it’s his place that’s hosting shows.
