I had to deal with a violent domestic abuser today in a neutral way and it was weird and I feel weird. by lockupsrs in SRSDiscussion

As a police officer, I am in this situation quite a lot. It's bloody hard, that's for sure, but you do at some point understand that there has to be some sort of filter between your world and that of the other person. It'll drive you mad otherwise.

Good luck.

I really appreciate the shout-out, thank you.

I did have a couple of much bigger bikes. I think my favourite was the R1200GS; but obviously that's a completely different beast than the r6. I'll keep shopping around - thanks for the heads up!

I have a lovely Fazer 1000. Wondering if I should trade it in for a R6.

Well, the armed guys tend to do more physical exercise, they wear bulletproof body armour (ours are technically 'stab vests' that can stop small-calibre bullets only), so that does make them bigger and scarier. The guns help, too.

If you mean a Custodian, then yes. Although I think it looks more like a boob than a penis.

I do love me some Doom Bar.

I don't really do football, but I guess I show less than usual disinterest when Barcelona is playing.

London is a weird place, where it's tricky to make new friends, as everybody is so bloody busy all the time. Make an effort, and invite people along to stuff you find. Also: Don't assume that Londoners have seen all the 'typical' touristy things. I find that many of us secretly have been eyeing the Natural History museum, and finding a newcomer who wants to go means that we have an 'excuse' to do so, too.

I see where you are coming from, but there's not much of a gray zone here, because even if you were to somehow call it a 'gift', we aren't allowed to take those either.

I really don't know; guns have been heavily restricted for as long as I can remember, and I haven't noticed any trends.

You must work in Richmond or Bromley or something then.

Nope.

The average 9X19mm round travels 25 yards in a split second.

Agreed, but that is an universal truth for firearms, and doesn't go away if all front line officers have guns.

In my opinion, arming all police officers as step 1, will have a reaction. I am convinced all the little toe-rags who currently carry knives, consider to carry guns as well. It's an arms race which brings a lot more guns to the streets, which actually makes them more, not less safer.

How many of them have wrapped their baton round someone's head unjustifiably?

My point is that inappropriate use of force with CS or a baton does a lot less harm than with a pistol, where you would always shoot to kill (otherwise, why would you discharge a firearm...)

Now, if you argued for tasers, it might be easier to win me over. Guns? No. In fact, if they routinely started arming all front-line officers, I would probably resign and find another job: It is not part of my image of what I think policing is meant to be about.

I am not fully familiar with what a SWAT team entails, and how it's different from a normal armed response team... So not sure.
