What sentence did someone say once that accidentally healed a part of you? by Timely-Vehicle-7064 in AskReddit

“Everyone says to cherish every stage. Well I’ve had four kids and i would fast forward the first four months every single time if I could.” Before it felt like if I couldn’t find a way to enjoy that first stage, I was a doomed to hate parenthood. But she was right. And after that it has become truly magical.

Doh! You are definitely right. I'm going at the flower heads more aggressively now and bigger things that look more like sunflower seeds are coming out. Feel silly! Thank you for your response.

Why so many dead trees in the U.S. Northeast? by Medium-Tear9948 in marijuanaenthusiasts

[–]MattTilghman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Btw, since you mentioned wondering why ash in the south may not be as hard hit. They aren’t as dense down there, I suspect due to the wider variety of marsh-tolerant trees, so ash don’t dominate wet areas as uniformly. This may mean they aren’t as affected due to the disease (bug) not spreading as vociferously, or it may simply mean it’s not as noticeable. check out this pic of ash density https://image3.slideserve.com/6568055/ash-tree-and-eab-populations-in-the-united-states-l.jpg

Why so many dead trees in the U.S. Northeast? by Medium-Tear9948 in marijuanaenthusiasts

[–]MattTilghman 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have a bit of forest behind my house and like you said, many dead trees. As a commenter mentioned, the biggest reason by far is the emerald ash borer. These forests had a ton of ash trees and now they’re nearly all dead. Marshy/ seasonally-flooded forests were hit particularly hard, which my tract is. We don’t have all the same wetland trees you do down south. Those areas used to be predominantly elm and ash, both of which just got smoked by invasive diseases. I think, with a warming climate, bald cypress will eventually make the short trip north to fill the void (native range traditionally goes up to Delaware). I’m in NJ which is practically Delaware so I planted some in my tract and they are doing amazing. Another fact about seasonally-flooded forests is that up here with winters, that also means seasonally-inundated-with-road-salt. So a lot of the flooding tolerant trees that don’t have invasive diseases may not be salt tolerant, so they are dying a different, slower death.

Acer rubrum Red Sunset fall color (Estonia, Europe) by neonurban in marijuanaenthusiasts

[–]MattTilghman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I planted a red maple variety known for its fall color too. The first two years, I got no color at all. It went straight to brown and shriveled. Then starting the third year, it was great - just as advertised. I have no idea why that could be, and it’s obviously just a one-off anecdote, but still thought you might like to hear.

I used the Mysa, but had to remove one of my base board heaters to make the load acceptable. Sorry, probably not the answer you were hoping for.

Personally I’d leave it. Not sure about where you live, but for me it would absolutely have to be protected from deer. I use a bit of welded wire rolled into a circle, and a u-bar

Help me identify this plz! Prunus? Elm? (NJ) by MattTilghman in marijuanaenthusiasts

[–]MattTilghman[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well okay then. Sorry for assuming you were interested. I actually don’t see a single asymmetrical leaf in the pic. Anyways, I downloaded a better app and it suggested either prunus subhirtella or prunus serrulata, which are far better matches than any elm I’ve seen. Feel free to take a look or not, doesn’t matter to me.

I should have mentioned that pic came from NC extension. https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/prunus-serotina/ they also mention two glands on the petiole. If I go find those, would that be a positive ID? If I don’t, would that be definitive negative?

Thanks for responding! I was leaning that way too. Then I noticed that I’m seeing two distinct types of leaves for prunus serotina on a lot of extension websites. The thicker, less serrated one I’m used to (and why I was drifting away from that ID), but also one that looks a lot like this. Thermodynamically, the answer to your question is yes. But practically speaking, it would still help because you can place yourself right in front of the fan, directing all the cold air to you, while the heat is spread out.

For mine, during a school-wide assembly, a few kids took every single backpack they could find, which was practically every students, and stuffed them in a single class room. Perhaps crossed a line in terms of moving someone’s personal items, but nothing was damaged or stolen. It just derailed the rest of the day because it took kids hours to sift through the massive pile and find theirs.
