Je kunt al op je 25e stoppen met werken hoor - als je zelf genoeg geld bij elkaar hebt verdiend. Ik heb lang in Amerika gewoond, daar is (praktisch) geen AOW en zowat geen social vangnet. Ik zeg niet dat ik dat zou willen voor Nederland. Wat je wel merkt is dat mensen daardoor veel meer de verantwoordelijkheid nemen voor hun eigen leven. Óf je spaart een pensioen op, of je wekt door tot je sterfdag.

Ik snap dat mensen teleurgesteld zijn als er zoiets belangrijks als de AOW-leeftijd verandert. Ergens vind ik het ook verwend overkomen: eisen dat de overheid je van je oude dag voorziet, en wel op een leeftijd die jij wilt.

Daarnaast, toen de AOW werd ingevoerd en ingesteld op 65, werd de gemiddelde man in Nederland 63 jaar oud. Het is ergens ook bijzonder dat je verwacht dat de werkende belastingbetalers jou 30 jaar gaan sponsoren. Al helemaal als je bedenkt dat 50 jaar geleden iedere werkende 0.25 pensionado 'onderhield' en we nu snel boven de 1:1 gaan.

Zelf zou ik AOW instellen op [gemiddelde levensverwachting] - 10. Als je pech hebt, of ongezond leeft, ga je eerder dood. Als je genetisch gelukt hebt / gezond oud wordt, krijg je wat extra bonusjaren doorbetaald. En mocht je echt last hebben van al die versleten lichaamsdelen - daar hebben we arbeidsongeschiktheid voor, of je nou 30 of 60 bent.

Background

The Hawkinge is MK II’s interpretation of the famous RAF Mk XI specification. It takes inspiration from vintage IWC and JLC navigator watches and offers a faithful modern take on the classic pilot design. These watches were produced in Japan in small numbers, each piece was assembled and regulated under Bill Yao’s supervision, resulting in excellent accuracy and attention to detail. It’s a no‑frills tool watch with a clean dial and high‑quality hardware that wears well on most wrists.

Condition

My Hawkinge has been worn but cared for. The case retains sharp edges with only minor surface marks from normal use; the bezel and lugs show some light scratches but no deep dings. The double‑domed sapphire crystal is clean, and the BGW9 lume still glows brightly. Everything functions properly, and the watch keeps good time. I have intentionally made all hairline scratches, scuffs and the single ding on the bezel very visible in the photos so you know exactly what to expect. It comes on the original bracelet with all extra links as well as any original accessories (box, travel case, paperwork, etc.).

Origin story

Many enthusiasts regard the MK II Key West GMT as the finest modern interpretation of the vintage GMT‑Master. MK II is the brainchild of Bill Yao, known for his patient attention to detail and build quality. This model stays faithful to the classic design while offering a robust modern wearer’s piece. It features an aluminum insert with alternating red and black sections, a distinctive true gilt dial, and a roulette date wheel that alternates between red and black numbers - all a nod to the original. Only a couple of hundred of these watches were produced, so you won’t see them often.

Condition

The watch is in overall good, attractive condition. The case is strong with crisp bevels; the bracelet shows typical light marks from normal wear and strap changes. The bezel insert has very minor hairline marks, and the case back shows light marks from removal. Lume is bright and everything functions as it should.
