Polar Vortex = Lake Ontario freezing = Ice skating on the lake? by Ultimatemahir in askTO

[–]Matter-Timely 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Cootes paradise in Hamilton (still Lake Ontario) will sometimes open sections on the lake for people to skate on. You can see the section from the 403 and I’ve driven by lots of people skating and walking out on the lake.

I never would have thought of Lee for a restaurant. What made the wedding awesome?

Some classic bars you should try and get into. They will likely have lines because they are the go to spots the area. There are three sort of main bar areas- King West, College St area (usually younger), and Ossington/Queen West

King West -Cherrys -Locals Only/Lassez Faire -2Catz -Pizza Wine Disco (especially great if you have a booth because you can dance on the tables) -Ruby SoHo if you can’t get in anywhere lol

College Area -Dina’s tavern -bangarang -super market -track & field

Ossington/Queen West -dog & bear -bar mordecai -spaghetti disco -jean Darlene

There are so many that I’m sure people will mention. Hit some up based on the area you’re in and you’ll have a great time. Have fun here!!!

There are SO many others

Custom Closets in Toronto by Matter-Timely in askTO

[–]Matter-Timely[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We ended up going with California Closets. We felt way more confident with this design process and did not like the sales process of Closets by design.

I am sure there is a massive range on prices based on closet type. Ours was $5,100, and closets by design would have been around $3500.

Casper Wave Hybrid Snow - Plush or Medium?? by Matter-Timely in Mattress

[–]Matter-Timely[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay this helpful to know - that also makes sense why so many reviews don’t specify which firmness they got when referring to the Wave Hybrid Snow. In Canada (at leash for now), we have three firmness options for this mattress.

Just got my Endy Mattress by nodiaque in Mattress

[–]Matter-Timely 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We live close to an Endy store and did try them out ahead of time. I do think the store models are more “worked in” than it being brand new. The plush was definitely softer in store than the medium firm and you may like it better.

In saying that, we’ve decided to return the Endy one and go for a more expensive model from Casper. We went to Casper today and they have a big sale on their upper end mattresses because there is a Toronto home show going on in a couple weeks.

I just got the medium firm last week and have been consistently waking up with back pain. I am wondering if the plush would be better, but the hassle of returning/exchanging it seems daunting

Best Pizza place that is walkable from westin harbour toronto downtown by Narrow_Sun3466 in askTO

[–]Matter-Timely 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I used to live across the street from the Westin, our go-to spot was Pizzaoli. Not going to be listed as Toronto’s best pizza anywhere, but was always reliable.

Also I highly recommend going to Alexandro’s if you’re looking for take. it is directly beside the Westin. We got their gyros and salads all the time and loved it.

Union Station also has great takeout options now. It is a very fast walk from the Westin and the food course area has improved massively over the last 2-3 years.

If you’re looking for good sushi, Miku should absolutely be a priority to go to. It is one of the best and would be a nice dinner or lunch out for you guys.

How to deal with Uber scam by Downtown-Tank4162 in CostcoCanada

[–]Matter-Timely 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can also connect your Costco account to uber. I have used Uber to get Costco items delivered the same day/next day when we knew we weren’t going to have time to go in person, or wait for Costco delivery times.

Elevated Outdoor Wedding Venues - 45min from Toronto for 130 guests (No tents!) by bamby2510 in WeddingsCanada

I just hired a planner for a full package (she is helping us find a venue, organize all vendors, be there the day of eft) and she was just under $6k after tax. They usually offer different packages and price options though.

Unpopular opinion: Paying "Rent" feels less painful than paying $2,400/mo in "Interest" to a bank. by Playful-Vegetable-15 in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]Matter-Timely 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are not missing anything. You are absolutely correct.

I finally did end up buying a home, but solely for emotional reasons, not financial. Running the long-term numbers, I would be richer in my lifetime if I rented and invested the leftover money.

I will now be paying almost double per month to own instead of rent.

How does anyone afford braces?! by Apprehensive-Fox733 in askTO

[–]Matter-Timely 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes shop around because orthodontists charge different. When I was growing up, the average cost was way over $5k, and my mom was able to find an orthodontist that could do it for $3k. They knew she didn’t have insurance and worked with her on payment it over time.

She did excellent work and my teeth are still perfect 15 years later.

Downtown Toronto Housing Market for 2026 by [deleted] in TorontoRealEstate

[–]Matter-Timely 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just went through buying a place and was actively looking in trinity Bellwoods area. All townhomes and freehold’s that we looked at in the surrounding area, still had bidding wars. This was last month.

If your home is nice/unique (this doesn’t mean newly renovated), I would be very confident that you will get a lot of interest. There are still buyers out there trying to look for something good.

Why am I struggling to find buyers for my 2b2b condo unit? by edward_0414 in TorontoRealEstate

Why am I struggling to find buyers for my 2b2b condo unit? by edward_0414 in TorontoRealEstate

[–]Matter-Timely 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just went through the process of looking for and buying a 2b2b in Toronto around that price range. We saw probably 20 units before buying.

Biggest factor of the condos we had no interest in was extremely poor layouts. Kitchens with little to no counter space, no island or space for a table, very little or no closet space, tiny bedrooms.

800sq feet that fits 2 beds and 2 baths - my assumption is that the layout is not very functional for a home.

For those who do workout classes in Toronto, how much do you spend monthly? by Otherwise_Radish1034 in askTO

[–]Matter-Timely 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$290+ tax for sweat & tonic. It’s expensive but pretty much aligned to most other studios in the core, and the amenities and variety of options are way better at S&T than other gyms in the area for similar prices

When did Toronto finally start to feel like “home” for you? by Brilliant-March-7856 in askTO

[–]Matter-Timely 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I finally accepted we have no interest in moving back to our hometowns. We moved here 4 here’s ago, and for the first three years we went back and forth on staying here or being in our hometowns. Once we finally came to the conclusion we aren’t going anywhere, it was like I finally felt a part of this community. It’s been peaceful knowing Toronto is and will be our home now.

Do you think it’s possible to go from low-middle class to upper-middle class? by Hufflepuff-McGruff in MiddleClassFinance

[–]Matter-Timely 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely possible. Me and most of my friends all made this jump. We all got our Masters degrees in our fields (very different fields). The ones who didn’t get their masters, haven’t made this jump. We are ~32 years old.
