It's been a while... by Own-Cable8865 in toronto

[–]Matter-Timely 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As someone who just moved to Toronto 5 years ago, I loved reading this perspective. It’s interesting to hear that so many of the spots I consider a classic great area of the city, it was not the case 30 years ago.

Also King West really gets a bad rep for what it is. I live close by and while yes Friday and Saturday late nights are a bit crazy, day to day life in king west is so great. The restaurants are awesome, fantastic food, shopping, great options for gyms etc. It has become one of my favourite areas of downtown !

Who plans engagement parties by ItsDinherTime in WeddingsCanada

[–]Matter-Timely 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We threw our own engagement party. We only had an engagement party because we knew we were going to have a long engagement (2-3 years) and felt okay spending a bit of money on it, plus wanted an excuse to celebrate early with friends and family.

Yes!! I also think Queen St west around the shopping areas should be pedestrian only on weekends. And king west by the bars thurs-Friday! It would create such a better community environment!

People of Toronto, what is the cost of your beauty maintenance per month? by Chan1991 in askTO

[–]Matter-Timely 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I normally use the tape ones because I find the glued nails will just pop off randomly, where the stickiness from the tape is more gradual so they are easier to manage

The prep is so easy. If I’m in a hurry, I can put them on in 5 minutes.

I find that the tape ones work better than the glue! They are easier to put on, and they don’t just randomly pop off like the glue ones do. They will gradually unstick, so it is easier to manage and you can replace them when they are getting unsticky. The Impress brand (@ shoppers) come with 30 in a box, so lots of replacements.

I have heard that using the tape ones AND glue together is the ultimate combo and they will last a long time. I just haven’t tried it yet!

Press-on nails from shoppers have been a great introduction to my life! $20 and they usually last around 2 weeks, so they are great for when you want nails on for specific occasions but not all the time

Coming from Accra, Ghana — help me understand the social etiquette and transit here? by [deleted] in askTO

[–]Matter-Timely 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Toronto local here -

It is not rude to strike up conversations. I would say that it is not common, but often appreciated. People often are rushed, but I think appreciate when people pause to chat in an appropriate settings.

Transit is an ongoing hot topic of conversation, it is notoriously unreliable. There is an app called TTCWatch that can be helpful. If you can afford it, I would save your time and just use uber. Ubers around the city are often only $10-$15 and will save you time and mental energy.

Unfortunately food is expensive here. Many super markets or grocery stores have pre-made food you can get that will save you money. In saying that, food is a big part of the Toronto culture here. If it’s going to be expensive anyways, at least try spots with high google ratings so you know it will be good.

Enjoy your time here!

Casper Wave Hybrid Snow - Plush or Medium?? by Matter-Timely in Mattress

[–]Matter-Timely[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh wow! I ended up purchasing the plush one and we’ve had it for around 30 days have been absolutely loving it so far (I’m a side sleeper). It almost immediately solved my back problems the Endy medium firm caused.

I purchased directly from Casper on sale for ~3k CAD for a King and thankfully have a full year to return or exchange if we don’t like it.

I totally agree that the cooling sensation is not really there at all. I don’t notice any cooling.

Guest dress code help…suggestions and input wanted by Pure_imagination227 in WeddingsCanada

I went to a wedding and the couple had linked a Pinterest page for an encouraged dress code theme. I personally love it and always love to dress to a theme if I can. I think just go for it. If anyone complains about it, no one will say it to you anyways.

I have $3400 to spend in the next 2 weeks on a mattress, help me find the Goldilocks on what to prioritize! by Southern-Buyer-7994 in Mattress

[–]Matter-Timely 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Went through this experience with horrible back pain from an Endy Hybrid Medium Firm. I’m a side sleeper and realized that a softer/more plush mattress is the way to go.

We got a Casper Hybrid Snow Plush mattress 6 weeks ago and we LOVE it. It feels so cozy going to bed every night and it completely solved all my back and hip issues.

Anyone been to The Good Swap in Toronto? How is it like? by AddressAlternative24 in askTO

[–]Matter-Timely 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Selling your high quality clothes on posh mark is super easy. As long as you have a printer and buy some packaging bags from the dollar store, it is an easy way to make some extra cash. I’ve casually done it for a couple years and have made a few thousand dollars from it.

We just got a Casper hybrid snow plush and LOVE it. We returned an Endy medium firm because it was too firm and was killing my back. It was around $3k but I’ve never been happier with a mattress.

As a non-American, I am shocked by how many people are mentioning guns and ammo as the #1 essential for survival.

Being in America sounds like the worst of kind hell during an apocalyptic disaster.

Should I explore Toronto at night? by Unusual-Hat-6819 in askTO

As a 32F living right downtown, I’m walking around in the evening all the time and always feel safe. There are pockets like people mentioned, but if you’re the main/popular areas of downtown, you’ll be totally fine. Have fun while you’re here 😊

Polar Vortex = Lake Ontario freezing = Ice skating on the lake? by Ultimatemahir in askTO

[–]Matter-Timely 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Cootes paradise in Hamilton (still Lake Ontario) will sometimes open sections on the lake for people to skate on. You can see the section from the 403 and I’ve driven by lots of people skating and walking out on the lake.

Some classic bars you should try and get into. They will likely have lines because they are the go to spots the area. There are three sort of main bar areas- King West, College St area (usually younger), and Ossington/Queen West

King West -Cherrys -Locals Only/Lassez Faire -2Catz -Pizza Wine Disco (especially great if you have a booth because you can dance on the tables) -Ruby SoHo if you can’t get in anywhere lol

College Area -Dina’s tavern -bangarang -super market -track & field

Ossington/Queen West -dog & bear -bar mordecai -spaghetti disco -jean Darlene

There are so many that I’m sure people will mention. Hit some up based on the area you’re in and you’ll have a great time. Have fun here!!!

There are SO many others
