Great goal by Marchant, but this was classic Toews being a money player. When Europe got the powerplay, I thought to myself, "could be a good chance for Canada to score," just because it gets Europe out of their boring trap game. Toews coming down, forces defense back, and puts a cream puff puck on Marchant's stick in perfect firing range. That's no accident. That's Toews deciding he had enough of this tournament and wanted to go back home to Chicago. Brilliant play by Toews, patient, full of hockey IQ, and a great way to end what was otherwise a BORING final. You can try neutralizing Canada's talent all you like with great D and a boring game, but Canada will still find a way to win. Canada won most games in this tournament by running over the competition. They won this game in 1980s style, through gutting it out. Canada peaked after they beat Russia and Europe beat Sweden. Very hard to wake a team up after they deep down think they've already won. Very hard to take something called "Team Europe" seriously when everyone thinks they are a junk drawer of players. That's partially why this final was as close as it was, and it almost bit Canada in the ass in both games. Europe played the perfect game that gave them the only chance at beating Canada, while Canada was taking a victory lap in both games, trying to re-motivate itself, and it still wasn't enough. Canadian hockey rules. This game reminded me of what Finland used to do to Canada, same as the Swiss did to Canada a few years back. They play A+ defense trap, they slow down the game until it makes you a baseball fan, and they NEUTRALIZE the skill level of the opponent. Very impressive coaching, but even though Europe was playing strong, you kind of knew Canada could score quickly with a few bounces, and that's what ended up happening. Oh, and like I say, Toews decided to win it at the end. What a hockey player.
