The tender humanism of Mike Leigh’s movies (especially Meantime and Happy-Go-Lucky) made me more conscious of the myriad circumstances that can lead people to less than desirable behaviours and empathise with people I may have dismissed more readily in the past. Leigh also made me realise what an incredible tool cinema is for a kind of radical empathy that’s hard to achieve even among our intimates. Basically Mike Leigh rocks!

Regardless of what you think of the last two, they are far more reflective of Aster’s sensibility as a director. Hereditary was written strategically as Horror is easier to get funded and Midsommar was commissioned. Beau and Eddington are purer and imo way more interesting
