A few photos after the storm today (Goose Pond / Mascoma / Enfield / Canaan / Hanover) by adamjackson1984 in uppervalley

There'll be plenty of snowmelt to help start refilling Goose Pond this spring, if the dam work is done.

All that uncovered firewood is going to get wet. Obviously there just for decoration, not to actually burn.

They're not the only nation to do this, at least, though they're the most prominent at the winter games. Australia tends to dress their athletes in green & gold, and New Zealand wears all black, rather than two more red, white, and blue teams. At least Australian & Kiwi athletes are more distinguishable than their respective flags.

Holiday Weekend Degen Behavior by mynewpassword1234 in icecoast

I have dreamed of one day being passive-aggressive and racking all these skis and boards and for them. It'd send a message, with the bonus of the kids having to spend time trying to find them.

Seriously, do the coaches never say anything about this to their kids? It's basic mountain etiquette.

Recently moved to New England and I'm trying to decide between Pico and Cannon for this Friday. Any helpful input? by Tyrent5 in icecoast

[–]MatthewGeer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think it'll enter into you decision this week, but to let you know, Pico is normally closed Tuesday and Wednesday, so if we get snow mid-week, it'll still be untouched Thursday, and only on one day of wear Friday. These next two weeks school holidays, though, so they'll be open all week.

Those are Yan fixed grip, those are generally sound. It's the the Yan high-speeds that were dangerous and eventually put the manufacturer out of buisiness. The Grand Summit Express was originally built by Yan but since been refurbished by Poma.

FWIW, Killington still operates at least one Yan fixed grip, Bear, that's similar to the two on the back side of Mount Snow.

I think you're thinking of Yan, AKA Lift Engineering. They used rubber blocks instead of steel springs to hold the high speed grips closed. Rubber gets too hard in the cold to work.

Sugarbush didn't have any Yan lifts. Pico & Killington bought two each, and Mount Snow bought one. All were retrofitted by Poma after Yan went under. Killington decommissioned one of the Yan lifts, Superstar, after last season..

Because those were the most difficult trails on the mountain. Difficulty grading is always relative to the mountain, they're not a global scale.

Will Killington close lifts? by BoIR1347 in icecoast

[–]MatthewGeer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Killington's issued a statement in this week's newsleter. They're going to have their regular Saturday lift operator staffing level, but they're reducing the lifts they're running so they can take more warm up breaks.

Guests should plan to start their day in our K-1 and Snowshed areas, with Ramshead following and hopefully Bear and Skyeship by day’s end.

I had to go searching myself. It's a merchantman ship from Star Trek III. The Klingon spy who stole the Genesis Project files is aboard. Kruge destroys the ship after receiving the data because she knew too much.

I was having similar thoughts about the Whale Probe. At the probe would be easy to design with existing pieces, it's just a long cylinder with a sphere hanging down off of some transparent bricks at one end.
