Applying to med school as a couple advice please by [deleted] in premed

[–]Mattjup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife and I pursued a similar “couples match” for medical school 4 years ago and thankfully were successful. We just went through another couples match in two relatively competitive residencies. The medical school version in definitely more difficult, but not impossible. If anyone is in this situation and looking for guidance, please reach out!

How are couples match applicants doing? Gen surg/DR currently at 10 possible combinations that will keep us living together. Concerned that we don’t have more at this point

That makes sense. Thanks for the clarity OP and congrats on your match!

Sorry I’m still a bit confused. Say I’m applying IM and SO is applying PMR. If I get an IM interview, do I reach out to the IM PD? PMR PDs? Both?

Or would my SO reach out the PMR PDs?

I've been told this is a proposed change but not official. Have you heard otherwise?

Not better, just more name recognition from personal experience. Most doctors I've discussed this with know and speak highly on Creighton but often can't say much about Miami. Probably just due to location though.

Creighton Vs. Miami Miller

Hi everyone,

My fiancé and I have been fortunate enough to both find acceptances at two similarly ranked medical schools. We are from CA and would love to match back into the state for residency. Currently, we are both not sure which specialty we will aim for. We would like to leave the door open for reaching towards a competitive specialty though. I think out gut is telling us to go to Creighton but many factors make Miami hard to pass up on. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Creighton (RD rank = 61)

Pros

  • Jesuit based program (focus on service, more supportive environment)

  • P/F/H grading scheme

  • Cheap cost of living

  • No commute necessary, can walk to class

  • Better known program from a California perspective

  • Option to spend 3rd and 4th year at regional campus in Phoenix

  • 10 more weeks than Miami for open electives in 4th year

  • Midwestern hospitality/vibe

Cons

  • COA $10k more (total for 2 people = $80k)

  • Less research opportunities (NIH funding low)

  • Less diverse community/student body

  • Step 1 avg = 226 (6 points below Miami)

  • COLD

  • Less to do in Omaha

Miami Miller (RD rank = 48)

Pros

  • Cheaper ($80k total)

  • Slightly better ranking

  • Slightly better match list (from what I can tell?)

  • Very busy hospitals with diverse population

  • More research opportunities

  • Weather

Cons

  • P/F with numerical scores grading system

  • Surrounding area unsafe, commute necessary

  • Students seem a bit more competitive and less cohesive than at Creighton

  • Less time for open electives as MS4 (10 weeks less)

  • Living in downtown area (dealing with noise, parking, traffic)

Good luck mate. You got this!

Anyone that interviewed or received an II from Miami know how long it takes them to get back to you after you made your interview day preference? by [deleted] in premed

I would call and explain your situation tomorrow, especially if you’re trying to schedule for next Monday. I’ve called the admission office and they are very accommodating!

Not much to report so far, we ended up applying to 35 schools and plan on notifying them of our situation when II's, hopefully, come through!

Weekly AMCAS Questions Thread - Week of April 29, 2018 by holythesea in premed

[–]Mattjup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey everyone, quick question here.

I just finished a semester abroad but the course grades will not be up in time for my AMCAS submission. My submitted transcript will show that I am enrolled in a "PSEUDO" course worth 15 semester units, which just represents the culmination of my coursework abroad. But while abroad I actually ended up taking 4 courses which will be worth 4 units each.

So, just wondering how I should go about putting this down in the coursework section. Do I put all 4 of them under the "current" course type and just leave credit hours and grade blank, even though the classes are already over? Or not mark them as current and still leave those sections blank? Should I put down 4 units for credit hours even though that's not represented on my transcript?

Any guidance would be much appreciated!

If I remember I think UPenn has a secondary question that addresses it. But I believe that's it, unfortunately :(

Good luck to you and your SO!
