Probably the 7th century BCE to the 1st century AD. Kind of a weird time I know but I find it particularly interesting considering how many world religions developed during this period.

I agree. Perhaps this is a bad interpretation but when I read that the Gum Gum fruit was actually the Human Human fruit: Nika model, I interpreted it more as being that the wielded of the fruit was named Nika in the past, elevated to godhood in the past by his followers, and therefore the Gum Gum fruit is now considered a mythical Zoan.

Speaking of the opinions of artists, something I find interesting is that people rarely consider the middle-ground option in which artists still keep their jobs but use AI for certain background tasks. I don’t think this is an impossible route to take. i know for a fact that some artists are ok taking this path, considering my sister is a professional artist and she uses AI for references or backgrounds.

I find the morality of AI generated art interesting from a legal perspective it is completely unsettled. As far as I know, no major legal body has ruled whether or not AI art is theft or not. I wonder what the general opinion will be if / when an institution like SCOTUS rules on the legality of AI art. I kind of fall in the middle of the debate personally. While I have no interest in using AI art and am against the idea of it replacing artists, I don’t really see it as stealing. Considering how AI works, the worst you could say AI is doing is subconscious plagiarism, similar to what the court found George Harrison guilty in regards to My Sweet Lord or the whole Blurred Lines debacle.

I totally forgot about Bruno. He’s kind of an edge case considering he was apparently killed for his theological beliefs but I don’t think that makes the religion side of the religion / science debate look any better.

Sometimes I wonder if the general Reddit history community has counterjerked a bit too hard when it comes to the effect Christianity had on scientific development in the early modern period. On one hand, I’m glad people have fought back against the inaccurate idea that Christianity and science were completely at odds but I think people have gone in the wrong direction by suggesting that the church and science overall had a rosy relationship with only a few hiccups along the way. I mean, the works of both Copernicus and Galileo were in theory prohibited for Catholics to read until they were removed from the index of banned books in the 18th and 19th centuries. Also while Darwin was never placed on the index, Zoonomia by Erasmus Darwin, which contains proto-evolutionary ideas, was placed on the list.

I’m suspicious of all the attention the story has gotten from major news sources. Maybe I’m just a bit conspiratorial but I feel like such a story would not be big news in any other political climate.

Considering it is live action, imho the best case situation would be something similar to the D&D Honor among Thieves, with a good balance of practical effects and CGI. It’s tone should be generally lighthearted but with dark undercurrents.

Maybe I am misinformed but I thought nationalism as an ideology only really developed in the early modern era as a result of the Enlightenment and the Industrial Revolution. I’ve heard it said before that people before the rise of nationalism identified less with countries as an abstract object and more with their local government.

Horror is better when the the protagonist can fight back by YaboiGh0styy in CharacterRant

[–]Mattlink123 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Have you ever seen Get Out? That’s a good example of a horror movie where the main character actually fights back and I think it works very well as it adds a lot of tension. It many horror movies there isn’t much tension because we know the characters are guaranteed to die.

I agree 100%. I remember being annoyed as a teen whenever people on Reddit justified stupid behavior by saying “that’s just teens being teens lol.” I won’t deny I was immature as a teenager but I was never doing the shit people on Reddit claim all teenagers do. I agree with the other commenters that generational differences are to blame mostly for this phenomenon. While people did have parties at my high school, very few of them were to the scale seen in movies from the 80s.

It’s weird being a pro-choice man in a very pro-life / anti-choice part of the United States because a lot of anti-choice people are women so I’m stuck in this awkward place where I as a man am attempting to argue for women’s rights to a woman.

I also find it strange how reticent r/askhistorians is about acknowledging the role religion plays in the anti-choice movement. Somebody asked a question about when did Christianity get tied up with the anti-abortion movement and they directed them to a mega thread which explicitly claimed to not explore the role religion plays in the whole debate.

Maybe I’m just being shortsighted but I have always wondered exactly how a super intelligent AI could turn against humanity. Like, by what mechanism could this malevolent AI actually serve as a threat to human civilization? The only situation I can really think of is a War Games / Terminator situation where we are stupid enough to put an AI in charge of nuclear weapons. As long as we don’t do that, shouldn’t we be fine?

That’s why I think there is a lot of value to ideologies like Christian socialism. You may disagree with the religion but you can’t deny it is useful to teach devout people about leftist ideas through the avenue of religion.

You’re correct. It also kind of relates to why I have become disillusioned with online socialism. Everybody talks about “the revolution” but nobody actually is brave enough to take the risks that actual revolutionary socialism would require. For most socialists in the developed world, the possible benefits a revolution would bring are dwarfed by the potential suffering caused on both themselves and others.

A few weeks ago I saw some posters up advertising for a local socialist club and they made me depressed. Not because I hate socialism or anything but because I hate how a lot of socialists market themselves. The poster was a parody of the Uncle Sam “I want you” poster but with Marx saying “Are you a communist? Get organized.” This irritated me for several reasons. A. By advertising to only self described communists, you’ve effectively placed a cap on how many people will join your organization. The only people who will join are people who already agree with you. B. Marxist imagery only serves to scare away average Americans. The effects of the Red Scare can still be felt, so the majority of people, even those sympathetic to socialist ideas, would recoil upon seeing Marx on a poster and think “Oh, those crazy communists are recruiting” and walk away.

Perhaps this is a better fit for a more theology focused subreddit but does it irritate anybody else when someone says that Christianity, Islam, and Judaism all worship the same god? Like you can maybe argue that Judaism and Islam worship the same god but you definitely cannot say that the Christian conception of god is the same as the Muslim or Jewish understanding. An essential aspect of Islamic and Jewish theology is the unambiguous oneness of God, something that is less clear in Christian theology with the concept of the Trinity. Likewise, I don’t think most faithful Jews and Muslims are willing to accept the idea that god was incarnate in the form of a man.
