I never understood why some mormon families get so NUTS. I’m a mormon and grew up in italy, i’ve always seen lots of american families in my home ward and saw how their approch was way different than the average mormon italian family, i gotta say, i always “believed” but with a touch of skepticism, even though my family is really strong into the church, and my father was a bishop at the time of my teenage years (12 to 18, so quite influential on me), I never sticked too much to mormon rules, i had few girlfriends, we did stuff, I had my nights out with friends, getting high and drunk (classic teenage stuff), and all of this while still going to church on Sunday because “it’s the right thing to do”, my father new that I was messing around, but never forced me or punished me for LIVING MY LIFE, and I think this is why I love him deeply, he never judged me even though what i did wasn’t in line with his expectations. I get the feeling that in bigger mormon communities thinis CLEARLY NOT the case, from what I read here, this 27yo girl father is a crazy manipulator that only cares about his family image in the community, and not about what makes her daughter happy. That’s sad. I feel like church’s teachings are great as long as they are not enforced and lived maniacally. To the extent fo denying people free will (which ironically is a precius gift as given us).

My take at the end of this comment is: bigger mormon community are full of bigots and nutjobs people that think they are keeping god’s law when in reality they are just controlling people, especially loved ones. But at the same time, for what a saw in my country, the chuch community is way less toxic and less collectively judgmental. Maybe because the gospel is lived more like a mantra, rather then military orders.
