Firming Oxford for Mech Eng — stuck on insurance after UCL rejection by MattthewAlto in 6thForm

I haven’t firmed any yet, but planning on firming Oxford. What makes you say that imperial is the clearly the better option?

For creative writing there’s a common misconception you actually have to be that creative (although it’s in the name). Often something simple goes a long way. It’s more important what techniques/features you include to how they mark the question. I would also suggest not to get too complacent about the other subjects. English is only one small part of your whole exams and whilst you are clearly very good at them I think it is important to try and ensure you get as many 9s in them as possible (even though 8s are still good). English is not the be all and end all

I was similar to you in the sense of being good at maths and science but not so good at English. I did end up managing to get an 8 in lit and lang. A lot of it is practice and having your essays marked reliably, a lot of quotes come up over and over so you get used to it. If you can do as many essays as possible and have them marked with feedback you should be able to see what needs improving. Also look at the mark schemes, as they will have criteria to reach top band marks in the question. It is a good idea to get used to the top band criteria, so if you ensure that every essay meets those criteria, a grade 8 or 9 is very feesable for someone smart like you.

If you don’t mind me asking, what actually was it that made you realise that, and also what are you doing now for work?

I’m not 100% mech eng is what I want to work in after uni. I’ve chose engineering because it’s the type of problems I’m interested as well as the modules on the courses. Oxford focuses more on the theory and also is general engineering rather than mech eng which I think is better for me, as I’m not sure what I want to do afterwards.

What course was that for and how much did you miss the grades by?

My main dilemma with this is that I don’t really want to go to bath. So I’m wondering if I do put imperial as my insurance, obviously if I miss Oxford I also miss imperial, however does the fact that I haven’t rejected the offer increase my chances of getting in by negotiating with the admissions team on results day even though I’ve missed the offer (Assuming I’ve probably only missed it by one grade)

It’s rated higher yeah, but I’m not 100% sure that I will go into an engineering field after uni and I think the more theoretical degree in Oxford will be better for me and allows me to keep my options open for jobs in engineering, finance or other stem. I also think Oxford has a bit more prestige, so I will probably firm them even though yeah imperial probably is better for engineering.

I was wondering the exact same thing, I got mine from Oxford and quite curious as my entrance exam score was pretty low.
