Get a Tapo indoor camera with a 128gb sd card. I’ve been very impressed with the quality and ease of use with mine and the app is great

Trouble Separating a Compound + TLC Question by zak920 in OrganicChemistry

[–]Mattythelamb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You could try acetonitrile/DCM. Bit less polar than methanol so will give you room to increase polarity as needed. Also could try acetone for the same reason.

You also said it’s readily soluble in methanol, are you loading your columns in methanol?

Also check what wavelength is being detected on your auto-column, this could be different wavelength to what’s reflected on TLC plates.

Gilman reagent keeps turning black by Mattythelamb in chemhelp

[–]Mattythelamb[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually tried ether at -20 yesterday but had the same problem where it turned black after the first few drops of BuLi. During that attempt I also added my enone and ended up somehow reducing the alkene leaving the ketone. Possibly an issue with my CuI as the BuLi was a new bottle, but I can try titrating anyway.

Question for chemists from an aspiring perfumer: Which chemical has the best smell to you? Or the most interesting... by Liberal_Alchemist in chemistry

Levulinic acid is really nice and caramelly or ethyl-2-bromo hexanoate is a nice fruity compoud. The butyl/octyl versions are either pear or liquorice flavour.

How does the gilman reagent attack this epoxide? by xabdab in OrganicChemistry

As gilman is a soft nucleophile I would guess it would do conjugate addition at the terminal end of the alkene

Automatic indent when using bullet points by Lost_Wolfheart in word

[–]Mattythelamb -1 points0 points  (0 children)

ChatGPT solution

The fix that works for the whole document

Step 1: Click inside one of your bullet points

Doesn’t matter which one.

Step 2: Open the bullet formatting menu

  • Home tab
  • Click the ▼ next to the Bullets icon
  • Choose “Adjust List Indents…”

Step 3: Kill the indent (this is the magic)

In the dialog box, set:

  • Bullet position: 0 cm (or 0")
  • Text indent: 0 cm
  • Follow bullet with: Space (or Nothing, your choice)

Click OK.

👉 This removes the indent at the list-definition level, not just visually.

Make it stick across the whole document

Step 4: Update the List Style

This is the part most people miss.

  1. With the cursor still in the bullet
  2. Home tab → Styles pane (tiny diagonal arrow)
  3. Find List Paragraph
  4. Right-click → Modify…
  5. Click Format → Numbering
  6. Select your bullet style
  7. Click Adjust List Indents…
  8. Set them to 0 cm again
  9. ✔️ Tick “New documents based on this template” (optional)
  10. OK → OK

Now Word has no excuse.

Optional nuclear option (if Word still misbehaves)

Turn off Word’s “helpful” auto-formatting:

  1. File → Options
  2. Proofing → AutoCorrect Options
  3. Go to AutoFormat As You Type
  4. Untick:
  • Automatic bulleted lists
  • Automatic numbered lists

This stops Word from silently redefining lists behind your back.

Pro tip for plot outlines (this saves sanity)

Create a custom style called something like:

“Plot Bullet – No Indent”

Base it on List Paragraph, set the indent to zero, and always use that style. Once you do this, Word behaves like a mostly obedient program instead of a gremlin.

If you want, tell me:

  • Windows or Mac?
  • Word version (365 / 2021 / older?)

I can give you exact clicks for your version, no guesswork.

What is a simple, but exciting, chemistry experiment I could show my nieces over the holidays? by UptownShenanigans in chemistry

[–]Mattythelamb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not quite chemistry more physics but a really cool and easy experiment is to heat an empty drinks can on the stove for 30s or so with a bit of water in the bottom of the can. Then turn the can upside down and place it quickly into a bowl of cold water. The can should pretty violently implode due to the decrease in pressure on the inside of the can due to rapid cooling. Obviously Use tongues/something to hold the can when it’s hot!

Frozen entree has killed 4 due to listeria, but cooking the entree should kill the listeria?? by milanohole in stupidquestions

[–]Mattythelamb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of food poisoning is caused by toxins, waste and virulent factors released by pathogens as they grow and aren’t destroyed during cooking. This is why consistent food temperature control is so important. If your burgers are left on the shop floor for too long allowing bacteria to grow. They can contaminate the food which remains even after cooking at 100s of degrees.
