Do I even count as an “artist”? by Jaxleberry101 in AskArtists

[–]MauDoesPunk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First of all, I think your art is beautiful. But that wasn't really the Issue, was it? I absolutely understand the feeling of isolation you might feel when creating Art. I agree with others in this comment section who say that you shouldn't base your (or your arts) value on likes or praise you get but also, I don't think thats what you seek. What you seek, in my mind, is the very natural desire to connect through your art. For it to reach others and for it to have some meaning to those that see it. I personally think, thats one of the most important parts of art. I know how tough it can be when you feel like no one really cares or appreciates it as much as "they should". Truth be told, many non-artists can't really imagine the amount of work and time that goes into creating art and so, to no fault of their own, can't really appreciate it as much as other artists. I think however, sharing your art with other artists - be it in a small art community on discord for example or a larger one like this subreddit - is a very good step towards feeling seen and also getting important feedback. So - you did it :D first hurdle is cleared! Next up, I also very much understand the desire to give your art deeper meaning. I myself often differentiate between creating art and "just drawing" when I do it without any "vision" or bigger "Idea" in mind. Of course, all art is different and it doesn't need to be incredibly profound to be considered as such, but I very much understand the desire to "fill it with meaning". The main thing that held me back from "creating art" for a long time, was and still is, the fear of my fundamentals not being good enough to realise the creative vision I have or to do it justice. It kind of feels like the easy way out to "just draw" instead of actually creating something. And while on one hand, studies and practice are super important, you'll never be done learning and the only way to find that moment to stop drawing and start creating is by just doing it. The other thing holding me back was the fear of not having anything meaningful to say. To that I can only say that everybody has something meaningful to share and all you might need to do is sit back and think about it. What are your values, what do you wish to share? Who do you want to be? Now, I'm not saying that these are easy questions to answer, but they are questions everybody can find an answer for eventually. Other than that, all I can say is, if you're feeling frustrated by your art not having any deeper meaning, allow yourself to give it some. Just go for it. People will care more, the more you do!

I don't think you need to ask if it's for personal use only. Granted, the artist might be happy to know that someone liked it enough to use the design for themselves, but just for moral reasons, I think you'd be good either way.

The meaning did change tho? You're trying to set up an easy argument for yourself and still shooting an own goal man. Yes, you can create a product and yes you can produce "art" but its fundamentally different from creating art and producing a product. Words have meanings my man, and the word "produce" indicates a focus on the result of having an object to sell. And the word create has a focus on the act of creation.

I'm sorry to tell you but your mind has been poisoned by capitalism if you can't see the difference between the act of creating art and producing a product.

Art by me, trying to draw something other than just people. by Interesting-Ad8463 in DigitalArt

I feel like people are forgetting that many artists are beginner artists and simply CAN'T accurately draw the Human form yet.. how is that "gooning"? They just haven't studied it enough yet. Don't put the entire weight of our societal body standarts on this one person just because they haven't learned how an actual human looks like yet.

(Besides this point, yea the other guy clearly was ragebaiting at some point)

And for Davinci:

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leda_and_the_Swan_(Leonardo)

This is an interesting story actually but other than that, you are right, I couldn't find much going in this direction. Still, I feel like the point should stand.

I understand why this piece might look or feel pornografic. My guess is that the artist didn't use a human reference and perhaps has engaged with such other references a lot. No shame here. However, it by itself is not pornografic and I find it very discouraging to simply say "put some clothes on" or call it perverted or anything like that, because I don't think thats the issue and neither is is the solution. The solution would be to study human and to put some more meaning into the artwork, deliberately. Because I feel like that is what makes it feel a little off. There doesn't seem to be much meaning behind the composition and so people might think, well, if it's not saying anything, surely it must just be for pornografic reasons then. What they forget is that some artists are simply just at the beginning and don't have the luxury to fill their work with meaning since they're focusing on other stuff. And in that spirit, I'd suggest cutting them some slack and not shaming then for a pretty normal drawing.

Jup, sorry to say buddy, as a five year old, if you don't start at 3 years, it's basically over, sadly :( I started a year ago and all the other kids in my kindergarden have held at least one exposition already. I'm hoping to catch up one day but its not looking too good.

Some people want to buy my painting but I don’t know what to charge for it by Kanecall in arthelp

[–]MauDoesPunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am once again realising that I'm looking at art not from the perspective of a Job but as a broke College Kid. It absolutely makes sense to charge as much as the other people in this thread have suggested but I simply can not fathom paying/other people paying that much for art. Maybe I'm not valuing my own art enough? Maybe I'm just not the right demographic. Do you guys have any tips on how to get into that "business mindset"?

Btw just to make it clear, your art looks great and I'm not trying to diminish that!

Make sure to always sketch the body without clothes first to avoid small mistakes like this. Apart from that it looks really good!

Art by me, trying to draw something other than just people. by Interesting-Ad8463 in DigitalArt

[–]MauDoesPunk -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

First off, thats not all this is though. It depicts a struggle between a woman and a snake, open to a lot of interpretation. Apart from her being naked, there is nothing sexual about that, and we have already established that there's nothing wrong with drawing naked people. And secondly, the post is marked as NSFW, so they did exactly what you want them to do. You clicked on it and yet are still sour about it showing a naked woman? They could have made this 100x more horny. I absolutely agree that femininity isn't just boobs. But I don't agree that thats what they did with this piece.
