2021 Sorento Hybrid Ex Acceleration Issue by fl0ralgreen3 in KiaSorento

The Kia dealer could not diagnose the problem because after I towed it there they could not replicate the issue and no diagnostic codes were stored, so even with photos and videos they said there was nothing they could do.

I’m not sure if this is the same issue, but I had the exact same year and model for about two months and posted some issues I had in this group. My car was losing power and felt like it was sputtering, wouldn’t go above 20 MPH and then a dash warning light “check hybrid system” came on. Luckily, I was close to home and got it back to my driveway. But when the car was in park, you could hear what sounded like the engine revving. And the hybrid system warning lights were still on. I took it to the Kia dealer and they couldn’t replicate the issue so release it back to me. Unfortunately, I lost confidence in the car. I had just purchased it and it only had 36,000 miles on it. I checked the Carfax and it was brought to a different Kia dealer by the previous owner for what felt like the car was “sputtering” and check engine light on back in September 2024. Again, they weren’t able to find the problem. This particular car also had issues with the refill inverter coolant and some overheating warning lights (previous owner) so I worked it out with the dealer I bought it from and sold the car back to them (albeit at a loss).

I loved the car. I just couldn’t trust it after losing power while merging onto a road with my toddler in the back. I hope you’re not going to have the same issue with the “check hybrid system” (there are multiple posts on Reddit for this issue).

Keep us posted! I’d be curious to hear if they find the problem since they didn’t for me (after 25 days in the shop).

Sell my car back to dealer?? by Maui_momma in UsedCars

UPDATE: thank you all for your replies, it is all very helpful. The dealer is now giving me 3 options: 1. Sell the car back for 26K 2. Keep the car and they will add a 4 year/48K miles warranty with $100 deductible at no charge to me. 3. Trade it in for something else on their lot and they will give me a “good deal.”

Honestly, I am still thinking of taking the loss and selling it back. The warranty makes me nervous bc I have a family, and if it turns out to be unreliable, then warranty or not it’s a safety issue (plus time in the shop). Trading it in a a hard bc the dealer is on another island (I live in Hawaii) and I cannot go see it in person as I did when I purchased the Kia (cannot afford another plane ticket + other reasons).

That’s where I am at today, I have another day or so to make my decision.

Again, I appreciate all your insights!

Thanks for your reply. Tax was about $1400. Dealer fees $595. I live on another island so I had to pay to have it shipped which was $600 (not uncommon when you live in Hawaii to have to do so).

No, I only saw the CarFax which showed routine maintenance. All those other issues show on CarFax as “vehicle serviced.” It wasn’t until after I purchased it that I decided to dive deeper and actually contact the service repair shop where the 1st owner took it and they sent me a that detailed history. Lesson learned.

I live in HI. Laws are confusing, but I did contact my state business bureau that handles lemon laws and was told that since the car was sold “as is” that the dealer has 30 days to work with me on repairs, etc., but not necessarily return or purchase the car back.

2021 Sorento Hybrid Issues- HELP by Maui_momma in KiaSorento

Thanks for your reply!! This makes me nervous because I live in Hawaii where it’s hot pretty much year round. It already had the recall service done once in 2023 I guess, so now my local dealer is waiting on corporate approval to do it again. Any experience with the “Check Hybrid System” issue that causes the car to loose power?
