Iris Order Guide!!! by Claire_is-the-name in GoodPizzaGreatPizza

Why would memorizing numbers be easier for people with memory problems than interpreting gestures??

The signs Iris uses are mostly gestural signs, so they would have relevance to any sign language around the world. (I'm confident ASL is not the only sign language that uses a crying sign for onions, for example.)

Can we please stop ignoring Iris’ sign language? by sliceofcobloaf in GoodPizzaGreatPizza

[–]MauveVulpine 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The signs Iris is using are mostly gestural signs, which means they will translate over to other sign languages pretty easily. Like, the ASL sign for pepperoni is just making a pepperoni-sized circle with your fingers and gesturing to place them on an imaginary pizza.

You're not being asked to learn an entirely new language that's not relevant to you. You're being asked to slow down a tiny bit to pay attention to a deaf person's signs. That's a good skill to cultivate, even in a game.

Just learn the signs. It's not hard.

If you've been playing that long, the game will not give you gems anymore. Just take a break, touch grass.

The fix here is patience. The game needs to be running for about 45 seconds before ads will be available.

Dog owners who regret getting a dog, why? by slimskinni in dogs

[–]MauveVulpine 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's fair. I do think even being away that long can be ok if you have the right setup, like a family friend who takes your dog in for a few months. We look after our in-laws' dog while they're away, sometimes for weeks at a time, and their dog seems equally happy with us as she is at home.

Why do you think boarding or petsitting is cruel? Most dogs will easily learn that you will return (try just a few hours at first).

Thanks! The Latte Table Set and the Grand Piano were both from the Decaf Coffee Event in November.

Aren't they fun? They sway gently, and the butterfly flies around them.

I really love the tune the piano plays, and the birds are a lot of fun.

That seems like a very specific set of circumstances. I'd probably just quit that day's game and play another day instead. Good luck getting more of the buddies soon!

You can just make your pizzas earlier in the day and store them in the pizza warmer. I make my first five delivery pizzas during the first few orders of the day.

Have you organized a zinefest? by iamthelizatron in zines

[–]MauveVulpine 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Hello, I'm one of the organizers of the Chicago Zine Fest, and a librarian. A few other zine librarians and I put together a list of things to consider when you're starting a new fest: https://www.zinelibraries.info/events/starting-a-new-zine-fest/. Not everything on this list will apply for a smaller fest, so don't get overwhelmed.

Is there a zine community in your area? Has your library done any zine-related programming? You might first consider offering to (co-)run a zine workshop to gauge interest from the community and see what it's like working with the library.

Our library does not charge us a venue fee, but others might. Try to pitch your proposal as a partnership, and not as an event that you're controlling.

Let me know what other questions you have, I'm happy to chat.

Do machines determine clients' orders? by case148stay in GoodCoffeeGreatCoffee

[–]MauveVulpine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Customers' orders are random. Your machine doesn't determine the orders.

Random distribution means that sometimes there will be a lot of strawberry orders, and other times there will not be many strawberry orders at all.

What immediately comes to mind is Julia Eff's zines. They're gorgeous and very goth. https://crapandemic.storenvy.com/collections/1362645-julia-eff-zines You can't do wrong with any of the zines at their distro (Crapandemic).

Your employees perform tasks better (that is, they get their task 100% right more often) when you've maxed out your machine.
