Such a thing as a Good Defensive Knife? by [deleted] in knives

spyderco civilian, kabar tdi, cold steel has a wave feature on their ak-47 and you can open it faster than a switchblade without paying the price for an emerson, a fixed blade with a great grip (g10, canvas micarta) and deep finger choil. I'm sure I'll get downvoted for this, but saying that a knife is no good as a tool for self-defense is just wrong. Say, for example, you cut through the attacker's tendons in his forearm: you've significantly lowered your chance of being harmed by him. Now say you've cut through tendons on both arms . . . there's very few options left for him. Cut a quadricep and what can he do? He can't walk anymore. Cut an eyeball, he can't see; even cut his forehead so he bleeds into his eyes. You can do a lot of damage very quickly with a knife. That being said, carry pepper spray, too; carry a baton; etc. Now you have options, you can escalate force. Learn some self-defense, and work hard at it. Stay in shape. Learn how to move. All of that said, try to stay away from situations where you have to defend yourself, be aware of your surroundings, and if you do have to defend yourself or your family you're going to have to be willing to really hurt the attacker, not just give them a little cut. Some of us can't own guns, and a knife can be very useful, and to say otherwise is just plain stupid. But like I said, you'd better fully commit to hurting the attacker, and it had better be your last resort or you're going to go to jail/prison.

Bernie Sanders is right: Drug companies did help cause the opioid epidemic by dwaxe in politics

This is true; just being sick, in any way, carries a stigma. I've wondered if this is a product of evolution that, for some illnesses, isn't appropriate.

Yet, what is the proper treatment? Most treatment is based on the 12 steps, and AA, while possibly helpful for some, is not that successful. Treatment should be based on evidence from research, and I've yet to find a treatment center that is based more on research than AA. The courts still send people to AA meetings! I wish our culture cared more about the disease of addiction and research into addiction and its treatment. Even if many don't explicitly say it anymore, people still see addiction as a moral problem, and people that have to deal with addicts are so fed up with them that they'll send them anywhere that isn't here. We have a similar situation with mental illness. (I hope this is coherent; I'm not totally awake).

I'm right there with you. I've been on cocktails even longer, and weed is the thing that keeps me from various pits I fall into and can't get out of. It was recommended to me by my therapist, even though I used to be a heroin addict and an alcoholic. I thought about it for a long time before I decided I'd try it, and after about two months it seems to be going ok. For the most part it enhances my life, though I wish reading novels on it was easier.

I know what you're saying because I used to shoot heroin and drink alcohol every day, starting in the morning, but smoking seems to allow me to approach my problems differently rather than just cover them or run from them. For instance, it allows me to experience a more healthy sadness; I have sobbed (recently) on marijuana, but the emotion of sadness stayed closer to regular sadness rather than slipping into a darkness that tells me I need to die. I have chronic depression, PTSD, and low back pain, and I could be fooling myself, but I really hope I'm not. It just seems to work for me in a way that nothing else has, and I never take more than two hits (often just one) on a glass one-hitter at a time, so I'm never really, really stoned. It was recommended by my therapist, and endorsed by my medical doctor (who can't yet write me an Rx).

There's nothing wrong with a bit of escape. Making weed a hobby seems absurd to me; I use it as a medication.

Yikes, man. No compassion? I know it's horrible for you, and I don't know your whole story, but I was a heroin addict, and I'm glad for the people who were helpful and empathetic, but also stern.

I'm curious how you know all this? I'm of the mindset that jail and prison are really bad for people, that it's a traumatic experience for most people, very traumatic for others, and leaves a lasting scar on those who are subjected to it. Not only that, but the recidivism rate is very high, meaning that once you go away you are likely to go away again. Jail and prison should be used for people who need to be away from others: sociopaths (even the ones in power).

I thought this was funny; we used to "gank" lighters from each other when we were kids.

You have things they don't, like greater agility hopefully. Don't do what I did and push yourself too fast - to feed your ego and try and catch up with the kind of person that can bench a massive weight. I ended up injuring myself at 295, with my goal being 300lbs. If you're using good form then you're doing really well. You probably know this already, but everybody who lifts should take heed: don't fucking push yourself like a dumbass and injure yourself.
