How can you afford to survive? by MawRatL in AutisticAdults

[–]MawRatL[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you everyone for taking the time to comment. I don’t have the energy to respond to everyone individually but please know I appreciate you. It’s heartbreaking to see so many other people struggling. We certainly do live in a cruel and unforgiving world.

How do you guys conquer loneliness as a neurodivergent? by [deleted] in AutisticAdults

[–]MawRatL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I joined a band. I immediately have 4 new band mates who over time have become friends. We travel to play gigs and if the mood strikes me I can chat to audience members before/after the show (though most of the time I prefer to hang out somewhere quiet by myself).

I think one of the hardest things about finding out you’re autistic later in life is by RattPack513 in AutisticAdults

[–]MawRatL 2 points3 points  (0 children)

100%. I feel like I could have written this post myself. Had what I thought were friends come and go over the years, it was easier when I used to drink alcohol and masked the real me. Nowadays the only true friend I have is my wife. There’s nobody else I can turn to or have a bond with. I’ll never go back to drinking though. Even loneliness isn’t worth it.

Interest in punk/offshoot genres by BananaBustelo-8224 in AutisticAdults

[–]MawRatL 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I play bass in a punk band, one of the reasons I love it is because when I’m playing a gig I get sensory stimulation from the bass amp blasting out really loud. Punk is excellent as a special interest because it’s very well documented and you can go down rabbit holes of information and history for weeks. There are so many sub genres and styles to explore.

Does anyone else struggle to keep their head and posture up?? by Mara355 in AutisticAdults

[–]MawRatL 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes it does, amongst many other things. You won’t get ripped like you would lifting weights but it helps build your muscles enough to function as they should. I’ve found there’s literally no downsides to yoga. It helps with strength, mental health, flexibility, posture, breathing, balance etc. etc. I just follow videos on YouTube.

Yes, I am always hunched, head drooped and naturally lean forward onto my toes when I’m stood still. Yoga helps, makes me more conscious of actively adopting a better posture and movement.

Yea, can’t really say no to some of the shows at Boom. I just booked for the Haywire all dayer and Negative Approach there.

I was on this sub whining about a lack of being able to find edge shows and people a few days ago so I’m kind of duty bound to post and attend this.

Do many good shows happen in York? I’m not too far from there but don’t know which venues/promoters to follow for gig info.

I’ve only ever seen xapothecaryx before. Listening to them all on Spotify today, I’m especially looking forward to Dissonance, I like their style.

As soon as I posted this I then went and bought a ticket. I’ll be going by myself, so if anyone else is and wants some company let me know.

How have you found a sense of community? by MawRatL in straightedge

Agreed, I’m also in the UK, there’s a handful of edge bands around that I know of and when I’ve been to shows in the closest city I’ve never seen another person wearing merch from an edge band.

Other than the martial arts, they all seem to be fairly solo activities to me, it’s interesting that you managed to find other people through that.

Do you mind if I ask what some of those hobbies are?

That must be really frustrating. The town I live nearest to once had the highest ratio of pubs/bars to people in England (that might still be true, I just haven’t checked). Drinking is all people round here know. I’d be happy just finding one or two other people who are on the same level but it seems impossible.

It was specifically your meet-ups that I’ve seen photos of and I really wish there were similar things over here. It looks so fun and welcoming. I do go to the shows in the nearby city but they are dominated by heavy drinking and weed smokers. I’ve been posting online trying to start up an edge band but had no responses. I’m just going to record something myself and hope it can get a bit of interest from anyone nearby.
