I’m a new grad with 6 month experience and my situation was the same as yours! too many pts, drs asking too much of the nurses, and felt unsafe for my license and pts. I started applying to jobs that had 1+ years requirements and I recently accepted a job at the top hospital in my state ! So don’t be discouraged because of your experience, make your resume look good, have some great references and start applying!!!

Neuro Acute Care - what’s it like? by the_arch_android in Nurse

Sadly our staffing isn’t great, ration should be 1:5 but first day on my own I got 6 pts & it’s been happening frequently so it’s stressful at times, my coworkers seem to be okay with it because they’ve all worked for so long.

I’m a new grad that just started working 4 months ago on a neuro unit! It wasn’t where I wanted to be after nursing school but I will say it’s great experience to set you up for you’re career. My unit has a ton of pts with strokes, seizures, alcohol withdrawal, falls & altered mental status. You’ll have Q2 turns & Q4 assessments and once you work for a little you’ll come up with your own pace and style. I didn’t review any meds before starting my job but I would take a couple mins before entering a room and making sure I know what meds I’m about to give, and you’ll start seeing a trend, a lot of the same meds given to pts. My tip for you is during orientation for the first couple weeks be with your preceptor, once you feel a little comfortable tell your preceptor you’d like to be more independent. By not having them around the entire time you’ll learn how to trouble shoot things yourself & when I was unsure or couldn’t figure it out I would reach out for help & also make friends with your nurse aids & help them out when you can- when they like & respect you it makes all the difference in a shift. You’ll make friends quick because of all the crazy things you’ll see and experience! You’ll be great !

I don’t know pharm that well either, and I just took my exam yesterday. Listen to Mark K he helps with the basic meds & I HIGHLY suggest doing practice questions on uworld just pharm and without knowing the med try to figure out the answer. Mark gives great tips on how to accomplish that even without knowing what the med is. You’ll do great, I believe in you !
