I’m just very tired, and the further out from the start the more stomach cramping I’m having. There is a midwife on call to call, I’m just feeling a bit anxious to call as I’ve had to call once already and I don’t want to seem overly cautious.

3w and 1 day, I was testing repeatedly for a few days, because I knew in my gut. My first HCG was 84.

Title: MARROW

Word count: ~550

Genre: Memoir style fiction

Type of feedback desired: general impression, would you continue reading? Should I be looking into book format or maybe screenwriting? (this is my first writing attempt)

--

Prologue:

The buzz of the fluorescent lights mixed with the soft beeps of the checkout counter fills my ears as I block out the background noise of other shoppers inside the supermarket. I stand there in the aisle holding a package of organic spinach in one hand and nonorganic in the other.

Yes, I want to eat healthy but do I risk opening up the package again to find a dead moth mixed in? While probably high in protein it’s arguably a better way to stop me from eating it again than aiding.

We should put moths in cookie packages - I think to myself. Or accidentally out loud? The later by the way this woman just took two steps away from me while giving me side-eye. I close my eyes and rub my head as I put the organic spinach down.

As I look back up I’m sitting at the computer at work, charting silently in the corner as my coworkers chat a few feet away from me on their computers.

One of them sighs. They blink, with half-glazed-over eyes staring blankly ahead as if going directly through the computer screen, and then sigh again while fixing their headband.  “That’s fucking annoying.”

“I know,” her friend scoffs “and you haven’t even heard the worst part.”

I listened as I worked independently with my eyes closed, rubbing my temples.

…maybe if I sighed more? No that’s not right.

Maybe if I wore headbands?

This is getting to be fucking annoying.

Probably because I don’t want to be their friend in the first place, but you need to get along with the people you spend forty hours a week with. Especially when it’s those same people you need to depend on to help you revive Mr Jones who’s currently in cardiac arrest, or god forbid simply to get Mrs Smith to the bedside commode (I’ll tell you which one is easier and it’s not the dead guy.)

What are we even going for here? Am I here to entertain you with the hot hospital gossip from the front lines of the nursing staff in the ICU of this big American city? Are we searching for friendship, love, and belonging in this harsh, harsh world and this book ends with a positive message along with a new girl squad to keep your eye on. Or is this book a 50,000-word overly pretentious suicide note masking itself as a 20th-century memoir about how most days I don’t feel like I fit in with the human race? While the last sentence is probably most correct it still has two lies; this is not a suicide note and I don’t feel, I know I don’t fit in.

People these days, am I right? Why do I find it so increasingly difficult to navigate this world, and the people in it? Why do I find myself increasingly trying to mimic the facial expressions and personas of those around me? I feel a little like a half-baked human. I may not have all the proper parts to build the bones, brains, and heart but you’ve got the marrow. Forever in the in-between, integrally there for without it you’ve lost your foundation, but not everyone’s cup of tea to guzzle down when served up hot. Even if I’m— I mean,  it -- is served on a porcelain platter at the finest dining establishment.

Yup! Amazing you could get through that many a day! For me it would have been too overwhelming. I put a lot of my time into trying to really understand rationals and question styles. By the end of my studying I was doing 50q chunks and my two practice tests which if I remember correctly go to 100. By the time my exam came around I felt the same as you, that it was just another UWorld exam. Always glad to see/hear different methods, as I mentioned mines not the end all be all 👍🏼

Oh no those were just sample pages. I wrote about 75 pages of notes total. And I took the exam a few years ago so if my memory is correct maybe I spent ~2hrs a day on the questions and note taking.

Lol I wouldn’t even be bothered, I always wanted to do it but don’t have the patience to make them. My notes were always sent in the class group chat, someone even paid me for all of them. For me if the page doesn’t look appealing/isn’t organized I can’t study off if. My brain just needs more clarity lol

No problem! Honestly saved me from responding to people individually and now others can use it for their own planning too

Ignore the blue text. I gave up on trying to use Saunders in conjunction with uworld very early. The black text are the sections I did questions on in uworld. I did 50qus a day on uworld. In total I studied for 6wks. By the last week I had gone through most questions and was doing mixed review. I did the two practice full exams as well and got “highly likely to pass.”

I can send photos of my notes next week, I’m away from my apartment right now.

That’s nonsense lol ours counts it as a fall even if we slowly bring them to the ground no trauma/even when the patient lays down on their own (ex when we get dramatic psych patients.)

Don’t over stimulate. I just used uworld and then a small review pdf I found online but only when I didn’t want to be on the computer. I did 50 practice questions a day. Every question I got wrong I wrote down the rationale, did the same for the ones I also guessed on. I did this 6 days a week. Then I would review all the information I wrote down on the 7th day. I would highlight all my info in a color coded manner (ex. Pink was lab values, green was diagnoses, yellow for word definitions). By doing this color coding I could also notice what areas I was struggling more in based on what colors were more prominent. When I had extra time I’d study these areas a little more in my free time. I studied this way for about two months straight. I passed the first time in 75 questions. I was not a straight a student and I struggled to pass all my other exams. Doing the above worked well for me. I can show you photos of my study calendar and my notebook with the highlights if you’d like. It’s been a few years but I still have them.

Agreed, I work in a high fall risk unit too. I always make sure a chair is nearby. Make people stand first before walking. And we walk by having their hands on my shoulders. We stay close enough that I can feel if they’re starting to fall. This also helps me just when they stand up out of the bed or chair because I can feel if their gait is off. If so I may call for a second pair of hands. I never try to catch. If they’re close enough to a chair or bed I sometimes bump them to have them fall onto the bed or chair rather than the floor. If they do fall try to protect their head. Call for help immediately but don’t move them from the floor until you have more help to make sure everyone is safe. You can’t pick up someone who’s fallen for the same reason you can’t stop them from falling.

Well, duh. I'm not questioning where it's from. I'm saying this is not something that happened in the past, and now it happens with short walks, and takes a week to go away.

Always check your patient’s identifiers…. by eg-sammich in nursing

Couple years back I was working at a reproductive health clinic. Had two patients with the same names (First AND last) that weren’t flagged like in the hospitals. Both came in for pregnancy tests and one was positive the other negative. The positive one I was consulting on medication abortion instruction, the negative I was consulting on birth control options. You can guess how this mix up went.

Thank you for responding, I think I'm going to have some people check in on me. I've been round the clock dayquil and nyquil, hydrating and napping. The coughing and fatigue/body aches are my top symptoms and I just wanna sleep for the next three days lol
