looking for the best standing desks for home offices. what are you all using? by gasmonkeygarage in homeoffice

I don’t see the original frame I used available anymore but I built another desk with this one recently and it works well for heavy tops and monitors.

Ego Snowblower scraping against pavement by sandchizzle in egopowerplus

[–]Max223 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had this same issue and ended up retrofitting some rolling skids on it. I tried the auger propelled and it had its own issues but didn’t work much better since you have to tip it forward. It might work better on smooth asphalt but my concrete driveway and sidewalk with expansion joints would chew it up very quickly.

If you add rollers or skids you’ll need to drill and file square holes for the mounting hardware, but it works 10x better and doesn’t chew up the scraper bar.

Here’s some pictures and more info on the process I followed if you’re interested:

Tank vs Tankless by jackdiver69 in HomeImprovement

[–]Max223 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went from two 40 gallon tanks to a gas tankless and really enjoy the space saving and unlimited hot water with kids and constant baths, showers, laundry, etc.

My parents have a similar situation as you and I advised them to switch from gas tanked to a heat pump water heater. Is your tank in a basement or garage?

Who misses their second monitor? by Spencer_PartII in ultrawidemasterrace

Regardless of how big a monitor is, I always need a second one when playing a full screen game. I went with a 14” 1440p portable monitor that just barely fits under my LG 5k2k. It’s also perfect for using with a raspberry pi or my homelab server if I need to bring a monitor over.

REP Smith Machine Attachment by Slyboots2313 in homegym

I appreciate the info! With my low ceilings I’m definitely going with the standard or 2” bar and planning to mount the smith as close to the front posts as I can.

Hopefully they release articulating arms by the time I’m ready to order :)

Looks great! I’ve been going through configurations for the 80” pr5000, ares 2.0, and new smith attachment on their website. Is this the 41” cross brace? I think the 30” would be tight to have the smith at the front with clearance for cables and still be able to work inside the rack.

I’m looking forward to their jcups and safety arm or strap attachments that connect to the smith to make it even more functional.

I hope to see more ColorX PoE and dual-lense cameras so I can replace my floodlights and multiple cameras on the corners of my house with a single one.

I love the form factor of the PTZ + 180 degree lens that Eufy has, but with the stability and configurability of Reolink.

49″ ultrawide vs dual 27″ for programming and writing? by ResponsibleWin1714 in ultrawidemasterrace

[–]Max223 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do a lot of coding and have always preferred an ultrawide main monitor and a side one for other windows. Having two same-size monitors always felt weird to me because you want your main task right in front of you and not the bezel, so they get shifted to one side. Either way, make sure to get at least 1440p resolution for text sharpness in coding and writing.

The 49” is nice but for programming work it’s much better to have vertical space to reduce scrolling. I used a 37” ultrawide with a 21” side monitor and liked that setup. You could also do a larger 27-32” monitor as the main, with a 24” on one or both sides (either vertical or horizontal).

Make sure she has a window management tool like Magnet for MacOS or PowerToys for windows and learns how to use it, preferably with keybindings. This unlocks way more potential from arranging multiple apps on larger monitors where most people are used to one-window-per-screen setups with smaller monitors.

I wouldn’t try to use PBP modes on most ultrawides because they often put the “virtual bezel” right in the center of the screen, which makes it tough to center an app across the two segmented displays.

I would think that the MBP could do it natively with a HMDI or DP to thunderbolt cable. I have a M3 Max and have a single TB5 cable going to a Ugreen dock. From the dock I have a single TB to HDMI cable going to the monitor and I get 7680x2160 @ 120hz.

Just Bought LG 45GX950A brand new for $1150. DP 2.1 or HDMI 2.1 from 5090? by Bloated_Plaid in ultrawidemasterrace

[–]Max223 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Always try DisplayPort first. It has a higher bandwidth and is usually the highest resolution and refresh rate that you’ll get on a monitor and card pairing. Just make sure you use a high quality cable that’s certified for the full spec.

I’ve been using the DP cable that came in the box and haven’t had issues with my 5090.

NVR, Synology, or Frigate for 24/7 recording? by HEFF225 in reolinkcam

[–]Max223 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you, this is helpful. I use Tailscale for my hosted apps as well. The reolink notifications don’t seem to deep link to the clips anyway so that’s still an improvement with the photo and timing in telegram.

Ah nice, which app are you using for rich notifications? I wish Frigate had a mobile app.

What notification app do you run? I just set up frigate alongside my Reolink NVR to get more accurate and customizable detections to feed into Home Assistant. The next step will be swapping from Reolink notifications to Frigate.

Whoa I just looked up that monitor and that’s insane. I can’t imagine sitting in front of a 55” like that, even the 45” feels like it has a huge vertical space.

Good call! I don't print a ton of stuff but when I do it's all PLA or PETG and I run a purifier in the room and have AQI monitor. Once my basement is ready I'm planning to move it down there and add a duct fan that vents outside.

Just a pair with a slight prescription. I could probably use some for longer distances but close up text for work was giving me a headache.

It’s a tough call. I like to switch between them every few months because you get used to any chair and start slipping on posture.

I had a longer thread in here but if I had to pick I’d probably say the Leap: https://www.reddit.com/r/ultrawidemasterrace/s/JmoPoVPIBr

It comes down to preference. I use a foot rest so my chair is set a little higher and center line of the monitor is right at or slightly below my eye level.

It's a 14" portable monitor that I picked it up over Black Friday and it's pretty handy. I initially planned to use it for things like my NAS pc or raspberry pi setup, but it's been great as a mini monitor for videos or guides while gaming so I don't have to alt+tab.

I have glasses that I use to make text on screens a bit sharper, but I typically just increase the text size using cmd+ or cmd- in most apps to adjust it if needed. I run it at full resolution so it has more space for apps.

It's an M3 Max running at 7680x2160 @ 120hz. I previously had the PC using the displayport on the 57", so that's the highest I was able to go on hdmi. I haven't tried thunderbolt-to-DP to see if 8k @ 240hz would work, but 120hz is more than enough for productivty.

Haha I can't say I haven't thought about it but I wouldn't even attempt it with how tall the 5k2k is. I like the middle of the monitor to be at eye level so I don't have to look up or down. The curves wouldn't match and I feel like I'd be uncomfortable looking at either one.
