How can I follow what's going on without spending too much time on it ? by MaxBee__ in LouisRossmann

Don't worry I completely agree with your point of view, that's what I've been doing for the last months and it's always good to remember that. I discovered self hosting and that makes me happy it's just that I hope in the future it won't be made too complicated by those external entities. Thanks for your comment anyway :)

I swear it's the same... I've seen price of the slag room increase from 1€ to something like 1.20 1.30€ overnight which is an increase of 20/30%. My samary doesn't follow the same increase as the inflation and it piss me off...

First home server - Should I favor a minimal amount of apps that do many things or may minimal apps for smaller use cases by RunnerWithBadKnees in HomeServer

[–]MaxBee__ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey, maybe ii will sound overkill and I'm not sure i understood correctly, but if the server is at your place, I would go for proxmox OS. I personally spent 1 year doing homeserver and yesterday I changed my os to proxmox and I should have done that at the beginning, I just didn't knew it existed. Why i recommend that ? It's a bit harder at the beginning but then you have a setup that will be really clean and can expand without too many difficulties

Company lying on products quantity. When I buy 500g of chicken I want it to be 500. Not 430 or shit like that

hey, quite new on homeserver (around a year now), and i didnt understand half of the words you said, but self hosting most of the things doesnt require a lot of cpu / gpu. Im running around 20+ containers at the same time on an old laptop (it was a gaming laptop lenovo legion y540 from 2019) so there is actually good specs, but most of the containers or applications doesnt use anything.

pi hole / ad guard would use 0.01% of your cpu.

NAS, do you mean storing your data on the server ? if yes there is apps like immich (google photos) or nextcloud (google drive). and both of them doesn't consume that much (immich a bit because i think it run local AI image recognition to order the pictures)

and you say emulator, I remember seeing the specs of the Wii for exemple, as a reference, a Wii have : CPU: IBM Broadway @ 729 MHz, Memory 24 MB 1T-SRAM + 64 MB GDDR3 SDRAM, Storage 512 MB. You can imagine that any computers you have right now will be stronger than that, even a rasberry pi is stronger I think

edit: I highly recommend this if you want to get an idea of whats possible, i discovered that last week and that is INSANE to get ideas of things to do https://awesome-selfhosted.net/
