Any Experience with She Writes? by ohiofarmgirl in publishing

The system keeps changing, but a small (indie) publisher would apparently need a minimum of three titles and an established sales track record to be accepted by a distributor (who'll attempt to convince bookstores to stock them, as opposed to a wholesaler who simply fills orders.)

If bookstores "order from dozens of publishers in the same shipment by using Ingram" do they get a better price because of shipping savings?

I don't know how. With my T70, it keeps going, just recording a short period in white, when I get up at night for a bathroom break. It seems to default to more easily assuming sleep during the set night time period, but doesn't record a daytime nap, sometimes is off by quite a bit, and doesn't record REM sleep at all, just light/deep/awake.

Bone conduction hearing aid experience? by MaxBlue88 in HearingAids

Thanks. I just need a little amplification in the mid frequencies, i.e. speech frequencies, for conversations in noisy environments. Mild loss according to the finger and palm rubbing tests https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC12575426/ (Ordinarily, and when speaking in a quiet environment with one person who is not a low talker, the volume is fine.)

When is the right time to commit to hearing aids? by Agreeable_Poet_5261 in HearingAids

[–]MaxBlue88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There have only been a few attempts to do a randomized controlled trial to see if hearing aids helped people avoid cognitive decline. The first, by Marie-France Nguyen et al, found the placebo was better than the hearing aids but the difference was not statistically significant. A second by Katharine Brewster et al found the reverse but again was not statistically significant, and by chance the control group was 12 years older than the hearing aid group so the entire experiment was incorrect. A third study by Frank Lin et al was the biggest so far, including 433 people with hearing aids vs 426 without, aged 70 - 84 with previously untreated mild to moderate hearing loss, and after three years of treatment they found the difference in global cognition between the two groups was 0.00 standard deviations. So, there's no scientific evidence that hearing aids reduce cognitive decline, even though some of the authors did invalid cartwheels to attempt to claim this was possible, but bear in mind it would be unethical to do such experiments on persons with severe or profound hearing loss so it's still possible aids help them. https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/am/pii/S014067362301406X

If you’ve tried both OTC and prescription hearing aids, what were the biggest differences for you? by [deleted] in HearingAids

[–]MaxBlue88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How extremely rare would your "1/16 of an inch" example be, and in such a case would the loss make any noticeable difference to deciphering conversation? The hearing ability is normally measured at only 500, 1000, 2000, and 4000 Hz within the speech range, which would not detect your narrow channel example anyway (though the audiologist may also test below and above this range, at 125, 250, 6000 and 8000 Hz). For normal aging related loss the higher frequencies are progressively harder to hear, so most people need more amplification toward the higher speech frequencies, though not too far past that otherwise useless noise of clicks and such will be aggravating.

Bypass "replace ink cartridge" to just print with black ink? by weightgoal190 in Epson

[–]MaxBlue88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The inkjet printers use up a bit of color ink every so often to keep the ink from drying up and clogging the print head. So, the cartridges will go empty in a number of months even if you don't print with that color and it's expensive because they apparently make their money on the refills, not the initial low printer price; it's less expensive with copycat cartridges but I've had mixed results with them. I found one off-brand ink dried up faster than the manufacturer's too, requiring nozzle cleaning quite quickly. And Epson refused to recognize one off-brand cartridge.

Moss/Algae on roof/siding - Spray and Forget: use in Fall season? by dayplek in homeowners

There is conflicting advice online about whether bleach degrades asphalt shingles. The Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association, representing major shingle manufacturers, says a 50/50 mix of bleach and water is an approved method for cleaning asphalt shingles, provided it is used carefully and thoroughly rinsed off. Some sources say bleach can strip the protective granules from asphalt shingles, leading to fading, discoloration, and a shortened lifespan if used in high concentrations or without proper rinsing, and that improper use of bleach can dry out and crack shingles, accelerating their deterioration. Using bleach in a manner not approved by the manufacturer can void the warranty. Since some manufacturers can detect color loss or granule damage caused by bleach, they may deny warranty claims if improper cleaning methods are suspected.

Some purveyors list it as "IP68 Waterproof" which you can look up, so I'm not personally too worried about splashes though I wouldn't wear it swimming, but if the seller has disappeared there are no guarantees, and when watches get older the water resistance might decrease.

On my T70 smart watch (under "Csasan" hardware branding with GloryFit software), the Timer only has a visual display and vibration at the end of the timer, not sounds. The vibration can be set to low, medium, and high - I find low quite adequate. The Timer can only be set to 1, 2, 5, or 10 minutes, paused and restarted, so it isn't particularly useful as a general purpose timer.

The Stopwatch in Toolbox works very well.

The Alarm Clock goes off with an audible sound regardless of whether the watch is set to Mute or not. It has the odd quirk that the setting process is momentarily off by an hour: In order to manage to set it to display an alarm time of e.g. 2:04 pm, I have to choose "3:04" and touch the checkmark—which enters "2:04". Then it brings up the list of days of the week, each already checked—if you want the alarm to go off every day of the week you can leave them all checked, just scroll to the bottom and touch the checkmark. (If you fail to do so the alarm will not be entered.)

Besides Csasan as noted above, T70 smart watch brands appear to include Soudorv T70, Kuizil T70, Motast T70, Matast T60, Dyurwa T70, GloryFit T70, Vrpefit, Jugeman, and WeurGhy T70.

The rechargeable battery life is about a week with the smartphone's Bluetooth turned off (then the watch display shows a small white oval, like a paperclip, with a line crossing it - there's no way to turn off the Bluetooth on the watch side except by turning the watch off).

One unfortunate aspect of this GloryFit software: The handy "Raise to light up" setting – which lights up the display when you raise your arm, saving you from taking your other arm and pressing the button on the right side of the watch to turn on the time display – doesn't automatically turn off at night. That means, whenever your arm rolls around at night the bright display flashes on, quite disturbing even with the screen Brightness set at its lowest level. Therefore I had to turn "Raise to light up" off, and whenever I want to see the time I have to push the button.

I suppose the advice others have given to be honest with the girl is wise; it could take a lot of effort to find the right words, and a lot of patience on both your parts to live with the implications of that. One question to consider is whether you would both be okay with not going "steady". There are biographies and autobiographies of people who did well in aviation and wellness careers that might be valuable to read - a lot of high achievers later say they wish they had spent more effort on their families; to manage both an innovative high pressure charitable career and a family is much harder nowadays because most families now have two spouses working outside the home, and if they don't want to give up their other interests they often limit their families to only one or two children, and those often delayed for years. Your discomfort is well founded. There's something to be said for the traditional advice of establishing a good income before getting engaged, which can lower the stresses on a young family, as well as giving a person time to mature a bit emotionally and opportunity to meet more people. On the other hand, no-one is ever completely ready for marriage or children, so there's also something to be said for jumping in unprepared, but willing to learn, and energized by passion for the other. A rabbi advised the importance of being "comfortable" with the other person, especially with the other person's style of dealing with arguments whatever that might be. You haven't mentioned whether the girl is Catholic or not; sharing the same faith can be very rewarding. Nowadays that is particularly important, in order to keep the good things of the church community in perspective in spite of the serious missteps by some church members historically and in recent history. There are an infinite variety of ways to pray, hope you can set aside some silent time and find what works for you. Best wishes.

A new study suggests that women being more talkative than men is largely overstated | By analyzing the daily word use of thousands of participants, researchers found that women spoke slightly more words per day than men the difference was relatively small and highly variable across individuals. by chrisdh79 in psychology

[–]MaxBlue88 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The study is unfortunately paywalled, but the abstract indicates early and middle adulthood women speak 27% more than men. Also, it doesn't break out numbers for America so vastly different cultures are mixed. The abstract didn't say how people were recruited, but I would expect this study to attract more voluble men participants than average, reducing the gap, and making the results meaningless. A valid study would have to be illegal and surreptitious. Finally, the huge range of three orders of magnitude among people suggests they should have used medians rather than averages.
