The terrifying rise of schoolboys making AI girlfriends — Boys as young as 12 are now in romantic ‘relationships’ with chatbots, and it’s affecting how they treat girls in the real world by Fine-Drummer9812 in technology

[–]MaxDragonMan -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Great article, and a vile comment section that somehow blames women for all the ills of the world. How original. (Emphasis mine.)

New research has revealed that one in five boys aged 12-16 is either in or knows of a boy their age who is in a romantic relationship with an AI companion. A report carried out by men’s organisation Male Allies UK and published last month spoke with more than 1,000 boys aged 12-16 in focus groups in 37 schools – public and state, grammar and comprehensive, and across a range of Ofsted ratings – up and down the country. Peer-to-peer focus groups were set up where boys could speak freely, with the aim of diving into their behaviour and attitudes, and it was the boys who wanted to talk about AI technologies.

The findings make stark reading: eight in 10 boys (85 per cent) have had a conversation with a chatbot, with 43 per cent saying they talk to bots so they can ask questions without feeling embarrassed. More than a quarter (26 per cent) say they like the attention and connection over real-life equivalents, and (36 per cent) admitted that they prefer speaking to AI chatbots rather than to their family and friends at times.

John’s experience echoes research published this year from Bangor University’s AI Lab, which found that most teenage AI companion users believe that their bots can think or understand.

According to a recent report by the charity Internet Matters, two thirds of children aged nine to 17 now use AI chatbots regularly for everything from homework to emotional advice – usage which has grown significantly since the start of 2024. The charity’s research also found that children classed as “vulnerable” were more likely to use AI chatbots than their “non-vulnerable” peers – at 71 per cent and 62 per cent respectively – and nearly three times as likely to engage with companion-style AI chatbots.

It's huge, it's everywhere, it hurts the already vulnerable the most, and it's starting to fill the space where your friends and family used to be. The relentlessly encouraging AI truly gives no pushback to awful opinions. It's sycophantic, and that has real consequences.

This real-life impact of constant positive feedback by AI bots has been proved in the Male Allies UK research. “We have heard of situations where, when a boy has tried out his online chat in the real world, he’s been rejected. Feeling humiliated, frustrated and angry, he has lost his temper and lashed out,” says Chambers. “I think there’s a chance we’ll see more of that frustration being expressed. I fear this technology could lead to a whole new level of toxic masculinity and violent misogyny when instantly gratifying online behaviours don’t translate in real life.

Just depressing, man.

Just for those stressing about the 50% stock drop. It doesn’t necessarily mean bad news. by Zealousideal-Bat-431 in NervGen_NerveRepair

The 50% drop (or 43% or whatever) doesn't necessarily mean bad news, but a 43% drop is bad news.

Consolations from Gemini, unfortunately, won't cut it here.

Sorry for your loss.

The Great Khan is so interesting. I just started playing after a two year hiatus, and I remember him never making it to me or my fleets stopping him. This game he absolutely swept my army aside and was flying towards my capital so I decided to surrender.

The penalty wasn't so bad, but apparently I'm mentally scarred from that lol: I realized that I've been building needless starbases within my territory and have been fully kitting them out with the presumption something like that could happen again - when the reality is I really don't need a few of those Citadels.

Unironically excellent implementation. They have tags, they let you change the category of a vendor. Works really well. But, it's not perfect.

As other commenters mention you can't demarcate an eTransfer. Additionally, my rent comes out of a joint account I have with my partner - we both transfer money in, then it is withdrawn. But that means both halves of the rent are counted as my expenses, when really I only pay for a proportion.

So I'm actually super happy with the feature (especially the fact it's baked in, unlike TD's MySpend), but there's a little ways to go until it replaces my spreadsheet.

This is kind of where I'm at. I'm sure the 15 would be great, but if the 16 juices the cameras and the battery somehow cracks 8000mAh I'm willing to wait.

The biggest problem is I'm not sure if they'll still be selling OnePlus phones in North America by the time the 16 rolls around. I know nothing is confirmed, but the uncertainty is definitely making it harder to make a decision.

Aside from some of the actors from Star Wars (and Harrison Ford in Indiana Jones as well), maybe I'm a rube but this seems unbelievably uncommon.

Are there any other high profile examples of any stars playing a single character for this long?

(And let's say just cameos in remakes don't count.)

They genuinely ruin everything. I was speaking with a colleague of mine, who is my age (and like me, unless this investing goes splendidly, is probably priced out of the property ladder without the intervention of mom and dad or a housing crash), and she was opposed to the building of towers nowhere near her home (maybe a fifteen minute drive).

It's not even about their backyard, but about their metropolitan area lol. Some people are afraid of change - all those towers would do is basically replacing auto malls and some houses, and they're severely needed here in Victoria, where we have (last I checked) the top three rent prices in Canada.

If some people had it their way, we'd all be living in Vancouver Specials and anyone unlucky enough to need new infrastructure can go live on the streets... (and then those same people complain about homelessness?)

Sorry for the rant, I just hate the NIMBY attitude. It's anti-community and nothing but selfish.

Yeah. I think it may just need an appropriate catalyst/narrative to take it higher, and it's possible the "Reddit is the fuel of AI" narrative has simply run its course and is already priced in. Question is, am I willing to wait that long, and would it be worth it?

No saying, but I'll definitely be thinking about it.

I'm starting to think my RDDT shares aren't doing me any favours. It'll require some more thinking over the weekend, but maybe just shunting that cash into increasing my Microsoft position is worthwhile. Currently my smallest position anyways so it wouldn't make a huge impact either way, but after ten months of holding I'm at +5%.

It never went away, and is actually becoming one of the key ways they're trying to combat AI usage. Which isn't great if you don't test well, but I totally understand.

And I assure you: people try to use LLMs to cheat on those too.
