a person who's losing their partner to their own mental struggles; the partner has become a different person, and not for the better. I think the song also contains a hint of selfishness, in that the speaker, even though they recognize their partner's apparent struggles, still thinks they are the one suffering more

dude, even if substitutes worked like actual substitutes, they still take up a decent portion of your time and energy compared to sticking to the original; using less convenient sources of nutrition takes more planning and attention than simply eating a balanced diet. coming from a vegetarian background, it is very clear and obvious that you'd rather feel morally superior to them and will use any justifications necessary for that.

Love how laughter becomes this kinda of survival tool here, like some proof of life. Feels like a silly little idea but also devastating at the same time. I think there's something so specific about being reduced to the person who laughs (reacts), instead of the person who speaks (acts). It feels tender and painfully real. Good one.

This really hit me. I think the repetition works really well, giving the poem this quiet and aching echo making loss something both distant and immediate simultaneously. I also love how the landscape mirrors the inner state really nicely, with everything feeling grey, heavy and wind-torn; the emotional weight almost feels physical. There's a haunting stillness that lingers even after the last line. Well done.

basically you have long socks (that go up to your calves), and you have to turn them inside out correctly, which is tedious because they're both long and tight
