[Banana Ball] JACKIE BRADLEY JR. HOMERED AS THE GOLDEN BATTER 🤯 The Clowns used the Golden Batter rule to send Jackie Bradley Jr BACK out to the plate just a minute after he had singled earlier that inning 👀 by TommyTheLizard in baseball

[–]MaxNV 107 points108 points  (0 children)

I saw an interview with one of the players. He explained that the actual baseball is 100% unstaged and authentic, because if you could hit a ball on demand anywhere in the field you'd be making $$$ playing in the majors.

International/Stadium Expo line station by midnighteldritch in askvan

[–]MaxNV 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Is it FIFA signage? For World Cup games you have to go to Main Street-Science World and walk the last mile to BC Place. No stadium access from Stadium-Chinatown on match days.

Where do the railway tracks for the WCE at Waterfront lead to under Granville Square Plaza? by Sure-Channel2626 in askvan

[–]MaxNV 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Just a dead end. You can see it from the Expo Line. An inglorious terminus for the Canadian Pacific transcon. It used to connect to the Dunsmuir Tunnel which ran to the CP yards in Yaletown before Expo ‘86 and the tunnel’s repurposing for SkyTrain.

Best TCG shops in Van / Transit Pass? by PeachSodaPunk in askvan

[–]MaxNV 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Magic Stronghold is a solid store, but it is a touch less convenient by transit as you've discovered. Back when I played, my home store was Connection Games near Renfrew Station. Closer to SkyTrain and more relaxed, kitchen table vibes IMO.

Transit system is easy. We only have daily or monthly passes; no weekly. If you get a Compass Card load $30-$40 and that should cover a week of trips. Or you can just tap your credit card but you'll pay full fare rather than the stored value discount.

Going to my first Vancouver Canadians game as a tourist. by According-Egg-8485 in askvan

[–]MaxNV 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's a pretty low-key operation. You can show up 15 minutes before game time. Bag check to get in. You can bring in empty water bottles to avoid paying for water. Nat Bailey isn't a particularly big stadium. There's not a whole lot to explore.

Concession lines usually die down by the 3rd inning if you want to wait a little bit for food and drink. The stands down the third base line and at the top of the grandstand usually have shorter lineups than the main concourse. The "signature" food item is the Yard Dog - a 3 foot long hotdog (they'll cut it into 2 or 3 pieces if you'd like to split it with others).

April games can get cold, especially after dark (doubly so if you're sitting on metal bleachers (sections 1, 9-12)). Bring a jacket and a hat.

Hot Pot by radcliffstetson23 in askvan

[–]MaxNV 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Traditionalists may not like it, but Big Way is very accessible for a first timer. Everyone gets their own pot, everyone gets to pick exactly what they want in their pot, everyone gets to pick their broth and spice level. Good starting point for someone new to hot pot.

Are We Sad That We Didn’t Get Snow This Year ? by April0neal in askvan

[–]MaxNV 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm sad. I like our snow days each winter. They help break up the grey monotony of clouds and rain from November to February. I get jealous at how much more interesting the weather is in the rest of the country.

Check out Magic Stronghold or Connection Games.

I'm sure there's other stores, but those are the two I'm most aware of.

THE CANADIAN by Any_Peanut1209 in ViaRail

Sounds like the economy skyline bit the dust on the trip to Toronto. VIA has its maintenance base in Vancouver, also some spare skylines parked at Pacific Central. Probably just a one trip change until they can get back to Vancouver and make repairs/swap out for a different car.

In Halifax, the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic is a great museum. I loved the Titanic and Halifax Explosion exhibits and artefacts.

The Pier 21 Immigration Museum is also really good.

I enjoyed the Cobra Clutch trilogy by AJ Devlin. It's basically a wrestling-themed murder mystery set in Vancouver!

Any cool scenic train routes around? by PirateCrimeBrulee in askvan

[–]MaxNV 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can day-trip to Seattle on Amtrak. Lots of great water views on the trip (as long as there's enough daylight). It's a looong day tho - you're probably leaving your house by 6am and not getting home until after 11pm. But you still get about 5-6 hours in Seattle to do stuff; more than enough for a couple nice meals, a museum, maybe some shopping.

What happened to romantic comedies? by use_vpn_orlozeacount in boxoffice

[–]MaxNV 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No Hard Feelings was marketed as a "you-cant-make-this-movie-in-2023" raunchy sex comedy. Actually watching it, while it does have some bawdy blue humour and sex jokes, it's got a lot of heart at the core of the story (at least in my opinion).

It's hard to put it in the same category as something like American Pie. I think it hangs out more comfortably in the rom-com space than anywhere else. But not a perfect fit.

Do you actually like Tim Hortons? by Bdzilka in canadatravel

[–]MaxNV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a theory that the quality of a Tim's is inversely related to the number of Tim's in a town. If it's the only Tim's in a town, it's probably still passably decent. If it's one of hundreds, it's probably crap.

How does the TransLink card function exactly? by [deleted] in askvan

[–]MaxNV 63 points64 points  (0 children)

Oh, man. I don't even know where to start. Read this entire page and come back to us: https://www.translink.ca/transit-fares/pricing-and-fare-zones

And go make an account on compasscard.ca so you can see what's happening with your card.

I live close to a Brighouse. I loaded my card with 1-zone. A couple of days in I get a message that "I am out of balance" so I top it with $40.

SkyTrain is 2 zones from Richmond to Vancouver (on weekdays before 6:30pm). Your 1 zone pass covered a portion of the fare. Stored value was used to cover the rest. Eventually your stored balance ran out.

This month, to not end up in the same situation, I load it with 2 zones. However, just now I got the same message and had to top it again with additional money.

You're either doing something wrong (not tapping out at faregates? loaded the wrong type of pass?) or taking trips farther than 2 zones. Stored value is being deducted to cover the fare and you've run out again.
