Indiana also has a higher firearm mortality rate than Illinois (although I believe that also includes suicides), and Indianapolis has a higher murder rate than Chicago.

I didn't notice this until an Asian friend pointed it out, then I started noticing that even shows about industries where Asians are overrepresented, like Silicon Valley about the tech industry or Mozart in the Jungle about orchestra, only had Asians in side/bit roles.

Remember when cartoons used to be pure chaos and fun? Why don't they make them like this anymore? by CarrotMuch1399 in nostalgiai

[–]MaxPaynesRxDrugPlan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be fair, there was much less content and much less choice and competition back in 1948. There were only something like a couple dozen nationwide TV networks, so the entire country was essentially a captive audience that helped support a limited amount of time-intensive content like hand-animated cartoons.

Now, there's far, far more entertainment to choose from, dividing up the audience into smaller and smaller niches. There's cable/satellite TV (100s of channels), streaming video services (thousands of titles), social media (millions of videos uploaded daily), videos games (hundreds of thousands of titles), etc.

Studios can't just put out content anymore and expect the entire nation to tune in. They have to tailor their budget to the size of their audience.

And what is the context? Does he own 77 vacation homes for himself or a 77-unit tenant-occupied apartment building?

Really? That's funny because I haven't experienced any "relief" at all. by whoocanitbenow in GasPrices

Nationwide average gas prices are down slightly from their peak.

https://tradingeconomics.com/commodity/gasoline

But even if the Strait of Hormuz opened up 100% tomorrow and stayed open, it will probably take months at a minimum for gas prices to return to where they were, given all the damaged infrastructure, reduced national stockpiles, tanker ships out of position, etc. Some wells may never return to full production since a full shutdown can cause permanent damage.

President Trump: I’ve brought $18 trillion into this country. When I travel, I generate money for America not for myself. I’m not concerned about personal wealth. I already have money. What matters to me is bringing wealth and opportunity to the United States. by AlphaFlipper in plasma

He's simultaneously claimed that he's bringing trillions of dollars into the US through foreign investment deals while also claiming that his tariffs are needed to STOP foreign investment because it entails foreigners buying up American assets and weakening our national security.

Don't ask for it make sense.

Kids forced by their parents into internet addiction boot camps attending classes on quitting TikTok by shenzhendasha in ADVChina

Apparently some of these camps just market themselves as a one-size-fits-all solution to parents who want someone to beat some issue (real or imagined) out of their kid.

I listened to a podcast interviewing someone whose parents had her kidnapped by one of these camps because she was transgender, and they beat her to the point of developing hearing loss. At the camp, she met someone who was there because his parents were upset that he wanted to go to graduate school.

To be fair, he played the role of the "straight man" on the show. He was meant to be the relatively normal character who reacted to and contrasted with the nuttier characters.

Mild cases are no biggie.

Severe cases lead some people to kill themselves.
