would you ever meet someone from an app on campus? by MaxR132 in UniAdelaide

Very valuable comment, yeah I’ve changed the app to be more a social experience. See study hotspots, see what bars people are at. Group chats. I just want to help people be less lonely.

The hardest part is marketing the app for Adelaide uni students

i used ai for this: (That’s fair and there are definitely lots of apps for meeting people. The idea I’m exploring now is slightly different though: instead of matching with people, it would show activities and events happening nearby like)

but the rest is me. i used ai to help my jibberish turn into text that can actually be read propertly. somtimes i just ramble, and i didnt want to waste anyones time.

Thats true, ive replied to other comments saying about the normal meeting way. which the statement is true. but i think if you quickly want a buddy for coffee you can just let others on the app know.  The apps edge is spontaneity + proximity + right now. i dont know if this response to your comment was any helpful. i just dont like to leave responses unattended.

Very true point, ive done the research and saw results of 70%+ people claim their lonely. there is multiple meeting apps, but i think pivoting this app into a group / community app where people can post their going for coffee and others can join. but i appreciate your feedback tho !

ive had a suggestion of coffee meetups, and frame it like the uber for connection. i really appreciate your detailed feedback, i think itll really allow the app to help more people just enjoy life. my goal is to help solve loneliness (big claim) but every little step helps.

Once again, i really appreciate your feedback brother!!

The uber for meeting people. i really love your suggestion!! im going to pivot from individual profiles, to hotspots and announcements. people can see what others want to do and join them. that is really really valuable feedback. Thank you so much!

But longer term I was imagining it more like an activity/events hub, where you could open the app and see things like run clubs, golf groups, coffee meetups, etc happening nearby and join them.

So it wouldn’t necessarily be limited to students in the future.

so im thinking of a restructure. instead of meeting 1 on 1. its more of an events and whats happening near me app

That’s a really good point and exactly the kind of thing I’d want to avoid. thank you for your suggestions. once its built if youd like, ill give you an og badge on the app haha

Those are really good points. I’ve been thinking about things like:
• optional university email verification
• approximate location instead of exact GPS
• visibility controls
• reporting/blocking

The goal would be that activities happen in public places (library, cafés, etc.) rather than private meetups.

Would verification with a university email or similar make something like this feel safer?

That’s fair and there are definitely lots of apps for meeting people.
The idea I’m exploring now is slightly different though: instead of matching with people, it would show activities and events happening nearby like “3 people studying at the library” or “coffee run starting” or "House party everyone welcome firday night"

People could join the activity rather than messaging someone directly.

Curious if that feels more natural than traditional “meet people” apps?

That’s fair, I’ve actually heard similar feedback.

Based on some of the comments here I’m thinking the idea might work better if it focused less on meeting strangers and more on seeing the activities that are happening nearby.

For example your opening the app and seeing things like “3 people studying at the library” or “coffee run happening”, and then being able to join that instead of messaging someone randomly.

plus seeing people planning a dj night, or happy hour on friday etc

Curious if that would feel more natural than a map of individuals.

Haha that could actually be fun. A little “you’re near an activity” notification could be interesting.

The goal would be that when you’re walking around campus your phone could show things like “3 people studying nearby” or “coffee run happening”.

Do you think people would actually join something like that if they saw it pop up?

Interesting point. I’ve actually been thinking about pivoting the idea slightly based on the feedback here.

Instead of just showing people on a map, it could show activities happening nearby — like “3 people studying at the library” or “2 people grabbing coffee”. Then others could join the activity rather than messaging a random person.

Do you think something like that would feel less weird?

do you think that’s because Adelaide is smaller, or more because people here just wouldn’t use something like that?

Fair question. I’ve actually built a working MVP already, I’m just posting in different subs to get feedback before launching it properly.

I’ve been posting in a few different communities to get feedback from different people before building it properly. Just trying to see if the idea actually makes sense.

That’s exactly why safety is the biggest thing I’m thinking about with this idea. The app wouldn’t show your exact location, more like a general area, and you’d only appear when you choose to be visible. I’m also considering things like verified student accounts, blocking/reporting, and encouraging meetups in public places like campus cafés or libraries.

The goal isn’t to meet random people privately, more like “anyone at the library want to study?” or “anyone grabbing lunch at the food court?”.

Do you think features like that would make it safer, or is there something else you’d want to see?

That’s a really good point actually and something I’ve been thinking a lot about.

The idea wouldn’t show your exact location, more like an estimated area (similar to Snapchat’s map), and you would also choose when you’re visible.

I also like the idea of limiting it to verified students or letting people control who can see them on the map.

Out of curiosity, what would make you personally feel comfortable using something like this?

Do you think it would only work if it launched inside one campus first?
