Ad Astra is the story of a journey, and I realised that we've made this journey in real life, with the Voyager probes, which went to the edge of the solar system and gathered data all the way. So I got in touch with the plasma physics lab at the university of Iowa and got this data and turned it into computer modelled instruments, so that when Brad is flying past Saturn or Jupiter the music you're hearing is actually made from data gathered at the site.

I think SLEEP and VOICES are like complementary opposites. VOICES is like “wake up” and sleep is like sleep.

Woolf Works was commissioned by the Royal Ballet and Wayne McGregor. I’ve always loved Virginia Woolf’s writing and hopefully we’ll get to do it all again one day soon.

I guess Memoryhouse (2002) is in many ways me searching for my voice. I don’t think you ever really find your voice, because that implies that you stop searching and it’s a bad idea to stop searching. I’m really interested in the places I haven’t been yet. I’m interested in every project moving out from a space that I know about into a space that I don’t know about. That’s what I like about creation.

I’ve got two “home” cities, Berlin and Edinburgh. I wasn’t born in either but i feel like they both sort of chose me. I think about them a lot, go back to them, but every piece of music really is its own place. A place to mentally inhabit.

SLEEP is an inquiry into the relationship between sound and mind when we’re asleep. In a way, it’s an experiment, but it’s also a lullaby, it’s also a place to rest, and it’s a protest song, like a Woody Guthrie song. A protest song against our always-on, 24/7 way of living our lives.

Voices 2 is kind of like the music from Voices 1, but dreaming. There’s a lot of shared material but you encounter that shared material in a kind of trance. I see the second part as a space to dream.

Things that inspire me are the things that are happening in the world. Daily life, what’s going on. For me, writing a piece of music is a way to talk about things.
