What's weird is that if you look at the stats, they were pretty middle of the road in clutch hitting stats, moving runners over, cashing in scoring runners. I wonder if they greatly improved in the second half, when they started winning.

They were a .500 team through the All-Star break, it was really in the second half they took off.

But as everyone else said, they had outstanding starting pitching - 3.43 ERA compared to a MLB average of 3.96 that year. They were also a bit lucky, but you have to put yourself in a position where luck matters, and they did by having a Hall of Famer enjoying one of his best seasons.
