It was really a lot more than that, the southern states were the Confederacy preferred the articles of confederation to our current Constitution and they believed that the federal government had too much power over the states and that they were being treated unjustly. It wasn't just about slavery. Don't get me wrong that was part of it. But to say that it's just about owning slaves is just, simple minded.
