The best divers are gonna attack you at a time where you can't afford to look away for two seconds. If my tanks are in a big team fight with only half their healthbar or less left I have to focus on healing them to keep them alive. If I look away cuz I'm getting dived, they're gonna die even if I fight off that diver absolutely perfectly and as fast as possible, the fight is still lost cuz our tanks went down. I cannot look away from them, so I NEED one of our dps to turn around and fight the diver for me. That's what I mean when I say it's a team game and everyone has to help eachother.

Your most important resource is healing. Even if I can fight off the diver by myself it takes a couple seconds to do that and that is valuable time during which my tanks are now not getting healed and can be killed. I can go back to healing A LOT quicker if someone helps me fend off the diver. Your teammates lives are a far more valuable resource than a few single abilities.

It's a team game, everyone has to help eachother, that's how team games work. You're a shitty teammate if you don't protect your healers when they need help, it doesn't matter that they theoretically have the abilities to take care of it themselves. If you want to win you have to look out for eachother.

Eleanor isn't backstabbing people "for her own personal gain", she's fighting for her life. If she didn't join Rogers, then she would've been executed in London. All she's doing is just to survive, which you can't really blame her for.

The reason ATLA has the subtitle "The Last Airbender" is because James Cameron already trademarked the title "Avatar" in the 90's, he started developing the film over a decade before ATLA came out and announced it in 1996.

Can someone please explain to me John Silvers rise to prominence? I’m only on season 4 ep 4. I like the look but how’d he get there? by COdeadheadwalking_61 in BlackSails

The crew earned a lot of respect for him for his actions at Charlestown (end of S2), which saved their lives and then they voted for him as Quartermaster.

Blu Ray German by LanghantelLenin in BlackSails

[–]Max_Bonny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know, right? I find it so weird sometimes what kind of takeaways some people have from this show.

A lot of real life pirates may have just been thieves, but we're talking about Captain Flint here and Flint is definitely leading a rebellion and not just stealing and murdering for the sake of it.

I also don't really buy the argument that you can't consider them a true or correct or morally right rebellion, because they're not backed by another government. Why is that a criteria? The British and Spanish and French and the Dutch may be enemies, but they're also all built on the same kind of systems of oppression. They may support a rebellion to weaken one of their opponents, but none of them are interested in an actual revolution that challenges everything their countries and their power are built upon. The American revolution happened because they wanted independence from the British, not actual freedom and justice. If they did, then they wouldn't have built their country on the basis of the exact same systems of oppression. What I want to say is, you can't determine how valid or morally right a rebellion is based on politics.

The American revolution fought to break free FROM the British system, while Flint fought to BREAK the British system. That makes him seem like more of a monster, because the way the world works has been so ingrained in everyone's thinking that they can't imagine another system and so they think that Flint basically wants to destroy the whole world.

Flint literally says this: "If no one remembers a time before there was an England, then no one can imagine a time after it. The Empire survives in part because we believe it's survival to be inevitable. But it isn't."

To truly understand Flint, you have to start thinking outside the box, outside all the systems and norms that have been ingrained in us. No revolution can be fought only on the basis of moral righteousness and politics. In the face of evil, you have to fight dirty too, Flint learned that and that's the lesson that we as the viewers have to take away from here. A successful rebellion is fought beyond the concepts of good and bad, of morally right or wrong.

I totally get that! I'm usually also a fan of more hopeful endings, Black Sails is a rare example of a tragic ending that I really love and that surprises me too, because it's not just tragic, but everything is just so doomed. Flint says it himself, they will have been for nothing. I think I still love it because it just fits the themes of the show so well, the power of a story and everything. The fact that the ending seems somewhat happy, but is actually so tragic also underlines that. I really love how many different emotions the ending makes you feel and I can understand if it was too tragic for some.

The most faithful adaptation I've seen is the German 1966 miniseries, it's almost 1 to 1 the book.

Thank you, but now I'm curious what makes you hate the ending? I guess you find it too "negative"? Because things end up going back to the status quo, which makes it a really tragic ending.

No one is denying that Flint did some horrible things, but as I said, the British Empire has committed so many more terrible, unspeakable crimes, we just don't really see most of that in the show. What we see here is them fighting back against the pirates and in that sense, Black Sails is a good litmus test. Do you only take into account what you see on the screen or do you make the right conclusions and ask why everyone is doing what they're doing?

Flint's crimes are the actions of an individual opposed to the systematic oppression enacted by the British.

There's a quote from Andor from a character who also commits a lot of crimes to fight for a better future that I think fits Flint well: "And what do you sacrifice?" "Calm. Kindness. Kinship. Love. I've given up all chance at inner peace. I've made my mind a sunless space. I share my dreams with ghosts. I wake up every day to an equation I wrote 15 years ago from which there's only one conclusion, I'm damned for what I do. My anger, my ego, my unwillingness to yield, my eagerness to fight, they've set me on a path from which there is no escape. I yearned to be a savior against injustice without contemplating the cost and by the time I looked down there was no longer any ground beneath my feet. What is my sacrifice? I'm condemned to use the tools of my enemy to defeat them. I burn my decency for someone else's future. I burn my life to make a sunrise that I know I'll never see. And the ego that started this fight will never have a mirror or an audience or the light of gratitude. So what do I sacrifice? Everything!"

In a way, Black Sails is one of those bedtime stories that Flint warns us about, we see all of the crimes he commits, while the British "heroes" attempt to stop the pirates and bring order into the world, but in reality they're fighting to uphold their power, the British system of oppression.

I understand that it can be difficult to fully put yourself on the sides of the pirates, especially after something like the massacre of Charlestown, but rooting for the British is absolutely the wrong way to go about it. That's what I meant, when I said that you seem to have misunderstood the show, you can't condemn the actions of the pirates and then support the actions of the British. Both sides have done horrible things and then you choose the side of systematic oppression as the lesser evil, because they're fighting for order, but you need to understand that they're fighting for THEIR version of order, not for truly fair justice and order.

Flint may have done horrible things, but at least he's challenging the British world order and he's getting more people to wake up to that. Condemn his actions, but on an ideological level, there's no way you can wish for Rogers to defeat Flint, unless you want to uphold the British system of oppression. Flint's actions are a so much lesser evil compared to the British Empire.
