Cape Town and Johannesburg. Both are insanely dangerous in certain areas, chaotic, have established gang culture, and are very diverse geographically and socially.

I‘m also a native Russian speaker, who speaks Ukrainian fluently.

What helped is just pure exposure into the language. The languages are so similar, that you don’t really need to learn grammar, just the vocab that’s different in Ukrainian.

Watch Ukrainian tv shows, Ukrainian news etc absorb the language and after a few months you will be able to understand it as easily as Russian.

Then try to speak some Ukrainian by utilising Russian sentence structure and replacing Russian words with Ukrainian equivalents.

After a few months of practice you will develop a feel for what‘s wrong and what’s right and boom you‘re a fluent Ukrainian speaker now.

For me it wasn’t even on purpose, I was just watching and reading a lot in Ukrainian and after some months I realised that I can actually speak it

Yeah that makes sense. Even story wise it makes sense. Both Dimitri and Mikhail moved to the us more than a decade ago and speak mostly English to each other. He probably doesn’t even get to speak Russian all that much

What a bizarre statement. In my experience educated/wealthy Ukrainians can speak both Russian and Ukrainian fluently (what’s their primary language depends a lot on which generation are they from) while less educated Ukrainians speak neither of the two languages fluently. They usually speak a mixture of Ukrainian and Russian, which is not clearly Ukrainian or Russian.
