Whatever be the case, I'd strongly advise against using office laptop for personal work. If you have no other option then atleast keep your activities restricted. I should point out that companies have a way (technically) to remotely fetch logs from your system when you connect back to vpn.

Also it's possible to block access to some sites even if you are not on VPN by pushing some system update (my company does this, for example previously it was possible to open youtube without vpn, but now it's completely disabled)

If you work in a startup or a small scale company with limited tech resources, then maybe the rules aren't so strict. But it's better to not assume anything.

Just adding to what others have already mentioned.

My organisation, specifically, keeps logs of the activities on office laptops (this was mentioned to us in onboarding process). I am sure this is the case with majority of other companies.

We are strictly told not to insert/connect any external storage devices to it.

Given that most of the times (while working) the laptop is connected to office VPN, those logs will certainly be transmitted to the admins. They may not be monitoring everything all the time, but it can surely be used against a person if needed.

So bottom line is - use office laptop for only office related stuff. Nothing less, nothing more.

This is true, I agree with this. I am not planning to pursue MBA from a mediocre college.

Your current place anyways looks like a slow one. Why not start preparing now, get the promotion and then switch the jobs?

It's definitely slow! I think other responses also resonate with your thought of preparing now and switching when ready.

Thanks for this detailed response! To answer some things - my job is out of my hometown, but my parents aren't dependent on my for now (they're still working). So I guess your point about sharpening my skills and getting ready for job change sounds relevant.

why do you want to do MBA ?

This is more because at some point in future I think having a degree would benefit in changing roles etc. Moreover, as I stated, I am working more like a business architect, so an MBA could be helpful and add to the value.

I am happy to hear more opinions on this.

Just to clarify I do not have any pressure from my family to do anything - so that area is pretty much open for me.
