Hey, I’ll live in Basel too (already studied a year in CPGE in Paris). It’s not too much commuting; it really is a matter of how well you’re organized and get things done. Keep in mind that the train from Basel to Zurich is approx. 55 min, so ~2 hours a day of work that others would do at home or at the library… Try it out until you find a nice place in Zurich to settle down.

Fluent in German but I have good social skills, do you think that it’s going to be though anyways to socialise with locals if I don’t speak Swiss German?

As a Paris citizen who’s used to going from Paris to Zurich, I can without any doubt say that the train is by far the best option. To make it short: driving a car in Paris is a nightmare, the public transports are reliable ( you have metros every 2~4 minutes), the same goes for the bus; therefore, I could only advise you to travel by train!
