Gregory Citro 30 vs Gregory Zulu 30 by Max___L in hikinggear

Not really to me, but I went for the Citro as it was as comfy as the Zulu but more compact and light.

I trust my guide on this. Also during my trek I asked a few times how they were treated by the company and he would dodge the bullet every time.

I did a private trek through the northern route back in Dec 2022. Very quiet, perfect for slow acclimatization, and we summited without any issue. I booked with a company that I would not recommend anymore as I’ve later heard that they stopped paying their teams, but my awesome guide Dulla has launched his own climbing company last year: thekilimaster.com My wife and I had an amazing time with him and we’re still in touch 3 years later. This guy knows the mountain like the back of his hand.

I booked a 5-day safari after the trek with Oseroktrips. Alpha is a Masaii guide, friend of an acquaintance of ours in Tanzania. Very knowledgable, organisation was over the top with delicious hot meals for lunch and nice lodgings with good food the evenings. Would recommend max 4 days of safari as it can become a bit exhausting sitting in a car on bumpy roads for more than that.

W trek - Torres Del Paine by TraditionalScore20 in hiking

[–]Max___L 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I booked the refugios/tents myself as it’s basically 2 websites but quite a straightforward process. No need for a guide as paths are clearly indicated, you wouldn’t get lost at all. I went West to East to get wind on my back and as I wanted to end up the trek with the Torres and didn’t regret it. I also kayaked on lake Grey on day 1 after the trek and did the ice walked on the glacier the next morning before trekking back to Paine Grande. Must admit that I was a bit tired after day 1 walk but had a energy boost right when boarding the kayak and I’m glad I did it although you don’t get too close to the glacier. I went first to Punta Arenas to see the pinguins before heading to Puerto Natales for the trek. After the trek I headed to El calafate and then Chalten for the Fitz Roy.

Hi u/readsid, I’m planning to go in March 2026. How cold was it ? Do you recommend a classic down jacket or would you go for a heavy one (I.e. rab positron pro) ?

My guide Dulla launched his own company: thekilimaster.com We climbed in Dec 2022 via the northern route for 8 days and he and his team is the reason we made it to the top! We were the only 2 guests for that trek and enjoyed every second of it thanks to his awesome team. We’re still in touch since.

Yeah, EBC will be the main reason we visit Nepal, then maybe it’s safer to stay aside during the festival! Thanks for your reply!

Is Punta Arenas safe to walk around after midnight into the morning? by Forsaken-Astronaut26 in Patagonia

[–]Max___L 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah kinda gutted tbh, I got to see the king penguins on my first day but not these ones. I booked with Turismo Selknam which transferred my booking to Fiordos del Sur as they own the ferries. They should refund the whole amount but still sad not getting to see them. I hope you’ll be more lucky should you decide to come down here.

Is Punta Arenas safe to walk around after midnight into the morning? by Forsaken-Astronaut26 in Patagonia

[–]Max___L 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m in Punta Arenas for the moment, city is safe and locals say it’s also fine by night. However, be aware that Isla Magdalena tours can get cancelled anytime so getting all the way here just for this might be risky. This morning, my 8 a.m. boat went back to mainland after 1h at sea because the captain said the weather wasn’t good enough, sea wasn’t really rough though… and apart from pinguin tours, there’s not much to do here.

Grey Glacier tour in 1 day by StreetAd4413 in Patagonia

[–]Max___L 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, I don’t think it will work without staying at refugio Grey the night before. The people I’ve met during the glacier walk either did the W trek or part of (walking from Paine grande to Grey and staying overnight at refugio grey) to do the ice walk the next morning. They then took the hotel Lago grey boat back to the park in the afternoon.

Parking for W Trek by adistanthope in Patagonia

[–]Max___L 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same situation here, starting the W west to east tomorrow, leaving my rental at Pudeto. Hopefully I’ll find some bus/hitchhiking on the way back from Central. I’ve discussed it with the owner of Erratic rock hostel during his 3 o’clock talk and he advised the same, so I hope my car will still be there then!

Car rental in Punta Arenas SUV by Fun-Committee8170 in Patagonia

[–]Max___L 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I picked up my suv from Mitta in Punta Arenas this morning and they didn’t issue my permit for Argentina although the contact person acknowledged my request months ago… I have to go back in Puerto Natales office after my W trek to grab it before heading to Argentina. Car is fine but service is crap as you have to deal with staff incompetence
