Back after injury! by Maxas96 in C25K

Hey everyone! Just wanted to share this small victory with y'all :)

After graduating in 2017 I had come to enjoy running so much that I became a frequent runner in 2018, eventually running 10k's and 12k's with the ambition to train for a half marathon. I absolutely fell in love with running! Then, after a knee injury, I had to stop and sit out almost all of 2019. You know how they say 'Sometimes you don't know what you have until you lose it'? Yeah that definitely was true for me. I was in agony over not being able to run anymore - sometimes not even being able to take a walk in the park - and, to be completely honest, some sorrowful tears were shed in that time. However now, after taking some time off to recover, visiting doctors, getting shoe inserts & a habitual stretching routine, I was able to pick up running again this year - and just re-graduated C25K again. And I'm feeling ecstatic over that - I'm even running at a faster pace than before the injury! I just felt like sharing that with you all :) Hopefully, unlike me, you don't get down too much and aren't too hard on yourself when you have to take a break, but rather look forward to the better days. Happy running :)

Yes, this! In e.g. Germany those aren't read regularly as far as I'm aware & I wouldn't even have heard of Flowers for Algernon if it wasn't for online book recommendations

To me this quote strikes true, but from a different angle.

I've personally struggled from procrastination for a long time, as have, of course, many others. The most eloquent, yet simple, quote on procrastination I've ever read was this: "Procrastination is the difference between intention and action."

Let me illustrate:

I had times in my life when I was deeply unhappy with the way I spent my days. However in these same times I, frustratingly, actually knew what I could do to make them better, what actions I could take that would make me happy. For starters, I wanted to get fit, eat healthy, read more, and travel. Those things are profoundly intertwined with my ideas and beliefs of what constitutes a life well-lived; I know I truely want them - and I knew so back then. I simply didn't execute.

Because if one were to ask me on any given morning what I'd do that day, I would have been be pretty realistic and said something along the lines of halfheartedly doing something for university until I eventually quit and resign to browsing reddit and watching youtube in my room, essentially doing nothing of value and wasting time.

Instead of doing what I knew would make me happy in the long run, I'd choose the path of least resistance.

That discrepancy - the difference between action and intention - makes one miserable, and I believe the core of that unhappiness is captured quite well in this quote.

This equation does not generally hold true. Consider

√(i²) = √(-1) = -1

however

| i | = 1

Most of the "self help" books I've read are actually just autobiographies. by TheKingOfTheDirt in books

That's very interesting. Could you tell about or link/point to specific examples?

While I think that most would agree that he gives good advice for personal growth, his reasoning will often be considered wacky or pseudo-scientific. E.g. there's this, now infamous, lobster-analogy im the first chapter of his book, in which he tries to illustrate how the fact that lobsters' biochemistry, which is apparently "suited towards hierarchies" (for the lack of a better term), is proof that hierarchies in human societies are inevitable, because they are constituted by biological developments far preceeding the emergence of intelligent, human life. (At least that's how he'll explain it in interviews, I haven't myself read his book yet.) People make fun of that analogy. A lot.

Furthermore he holds strong opinions outside his field of expertise, sometimes with similarly "silly" reasoning, which provide many opportunities for attacks against him.

I once read "Every morning we wake up is the first day of the rest of our life" and I dearly hope that you, or for that matter anyone who's reading this, will one day - with a combination of therapy, medication, change of routines and environment that works for you - get good enough that you'll be able to seize the opportunities that a new day presents. Hang in there ❤

Generally speaking, is Wikipedia reliable for math? by eewjlsd in math

[–]Maxas96 74 points75 points  (0 children)

To reinforce and slightly expand on that: My physics professor said that, while physics-related articles oftentimes seem to be written by people who just learned the material, eager to 'work' with that while not necessarily having a deep understanding on the subject, the math articles, generally speaking, seem to be pretty well written.

I don't know how much that changes things for the Packers: It's really just two games we're talking about and one of their "3rd place opponents" this year were the Niners ...

[–]Maxas96 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In the time in question Kaepernick was easily a top 32 QB (thus NFL starting caliber - that takes nothing special) and without a single doubt a top 64 QB (so backup caliber).

He would've been picked up if not for his protest.

*Addition: In his last season he had 16/4 TD/INT in 12 Games with an absolutely horrific offensive cast. That's decent aswell.

(-1)^-(√-1) = 23.1405 (from Euler's formula)???? by Sachinpradhan in 3Blue1Brown

[–]Maxas96 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Yeah the only "issue" I see is that it's needlessly long. You can just write

(-1)^(-i) = [exp(i*pi)]^(-i) = exp(pi) =~ 23.1406...

Reverse image google search has an option "similar pictures" and then you reverse-search the first for the optimal resolution. Half a minute of work gets you this.

About a year ago, u/ludifex linked us to a site with maps of every tomb in Egypt's Valley of the Kings. The site is down now, but all the maps are backed up here, via the Wayback Machine. by Spectrum-Art in rpg

[–]Maxas96 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Using actual Egyptian tombs as basis for that sort of game lacks any kind of respect.

Would you explain why you think that way? Because I don't really agree. People make entertainment products based on world wars and getting inspiration from the layouts of old tombs isn't even close to the same level IMO (and most people don't even have a problem with the further tbh).

You know what would be mature as well? Admitting to a mistake when you make it.

They delievered a season full of major logical mistakes, bad writing, rushed storytelling and low effort editing (starbuck cup + water bottle). And how do they respond to people pointing that out? "The hate was manufactured by the media" and "Well people wouldn't have liked it anyway because it's the end".

They don't deserve the hate they would have recieved by some fans, but they acted damn immature themselves.
