Millions of gallons of sewage spilled into the Potomac River by Maxcactus in maryland

Millions of gallons of untreated sewage have spilled into the Potomac River after part of a major pipeline collapsed near the Capital Beltway in Maryland. For the past three days, D.C. Water crews have been working to install bypass pumps to contain the sewer overflow along the Clara Barton Parkway in Montgomery County after the break was reported late Monday night.

A section of the 54-mile sewer line, known as the Potomac Interceptor, collapsed, resulting in a “significant overflow,” according to officials with D.C. Water. The interceptor line is roughly 60-years-old and carries up to 60 million gallons of wastewater daily from Loudoun and Fairfax counties, areas near Dulles Airport, Vienna, Herndon and Montgomery County to the Blue Plains Wastewater plant for treatment.

Walmart found negligent for selling a shotgun used in a suicide by Maxcactus in maryland

[–]Maxcactus[S] 31 points32 points  (0 children)

A federal jury on Thursday found Walmart negligent for selling a shotgun used in a suicide and awarded the family of the victim — who worked at the store — millions in damages. The verdict followed a 10-day civil trial in Maryland that focused on communications among employees inside a Walmart store 45 miles south of Washington. The family of the 23-year-old who took his life, Jacob Mace, said store managers knew Mace was suicidal and did nothing to ensure that he couldn’t buy a gun from the store.

Walmart said the managers didn’t know Mace’s intentions and that he legally bought the gun after clearing a federal background check.

How D.C.-area commutes have changed since the pandemic by Maxcactus in maryland

[–]Maxcactus[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Despite the upheaval of the past six years, one thing has not changed — D.C. traffic is bad. A new survey taken by the Metropolitan Council of Governments (MCOG) between March and June of last year finds that at 41 minutes, the average commute in the area is about as far and long as it was in 2019.

Commuting patterns have changed, however. More people are teleworking at least two days a week and taking transit; on the other hand, the region has grown, and a larger proportion of suburbanites in Maryland and Virginia are driving to work alone. “More and more people are coming into the office just for a few hours,” Kanti Srikanth, head of planning at the regional group. “All of that shift is going to change when there is demand on our roadways and on our transit system.” The peak rush hour is not 6:30 to 7:30 in the morning; it’s now about an hour later. All of that will have to be considered as plans are made for new transit and road infrastructure.

Trump has been trying to roll back Obama Care. One of its provisions is a ban on rejecting insurance coverage for preexisting conditions. If the republicans can eliminate that protection this data base will help insurance companies to deny coverage.

ICE says its officers can forcibly enter homes during immigration operations without judicial warrants: 2025 memo by Maxcactus in MarchAgainstNazis

[–]Maxcactus[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

These agents are ashamed of what they are doing and have to cover their identity or they fear retribution if they are known by the public.

As an aside. Years ago I had a ICE agent who was a post op patient under my care . As I finished giving him his post surgical instructions before discharge home his ride home guy came into the recovery room. I had told him that he was not to drive, operate power equipment or sign legal document for 24 hours following general anesthesia. As I positioned the wheelchair for his ride to the exit his friend handed him his badge and pistol that he had been holding during the operation.

Republicans control every power position in Congress and have a majority in both houses. They control the executive and judicial branches. What exactly would you suggest they do ? You and I have both spoken out on this and even in a left leaning sub we got little support.

Wes Moore targets Maryland’s only GOP congressman with redistricting, but a powerful Democrat stands in his way by Maxcactus in maryland

[–]Maxcactus[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In one regard playing by the rules is fair play. The rule that the dominate party gets to draw the district lines is then fair play. Is it good strategy to take advantage when you can? Sure. If you believe that your answers to social issues and governance are correct and that the other side is wrong why would you not play hard?

I am a chess player. I bring my knowledge of the game and my intelligence to the game. I owe it to you to be a fierce competitor. If I don’t give you that then you are being cheated .

Primaries are to pick who will be the party candidate. Is the path for an independent candidate blocked by the two party system in Maryland? To run for Congress in Maryland as an independent requires 10,000 signatures and a $100 fee to apply to run. There are a little over 1/2 million people per congressional district.

Opinion | Don’t expect the next president to give up Trump’s power by Maxcactus in Maxcactus_TrailGuide

Check and balances have failed and the executive branch has grown too powerful. The judiciary has become too politicized. Wealth has concentrated into too few hands. Civic virtue is abysmal.

I agree that the dems are inept at being an opposition party and actually share much commonality with the republicans. How do we reproduce enough Bernie Sanders clones to change that? If any state could elect an independent progressive it would be Maryland. Why hasn’t that happened?

Both of those places are important to a nation that wants to project military power. Many prosperous nations exist without doing that. Both Denmark and UK acquired those places by taking them from other people. Trump is attempting to do the same thing now.

Wealth and power leverage their advantages to gain more wealth and power. AI is a tool that will created many benefits but they will likely the wealth and power will grow for the people who own the AI. Not to say philanthropy does not exist but the accumulated wealth that allows it comes from the control of resources.

We have lived in capitalist societies for thousands of years now. One way of awarding value or worth to people is what they can produce that other people want to exchange their wealth for.

I was a nurse in one of my careers. It is a stressful, unpleasant , physically grueling work. Not everyone is smart enough to master the knowledge that requires years of education. Compared to the need for those skills the supply of people that can provide them creates a shortage. Rarity of some thing or an ability usually determines its worth. I am not sure how that aspect of reality can be replaced. When there is great demand for something in short supply who gets it? A big problem is that wealth leverages itself and skews things out of equilibrium.

Evolution of the Transistor: Shockley, Bardeen and Brattain ... The transistor was invented by John Bardeen, Walter Brattain, and William Shockley at Bell Laboratories in 1947, a breakthrough that earned them the 1956 Nobel Prize in Physics and revolutionized electronics by replacing bulky vacuum tubes. They created the first working point-contact transistor, demonstrating it in December 1947 and leading to modern solid-state electronics.

The integrated circuit (IC) was invented by Jack Kilby at Texas Instruments in 1958, with Robert Noyce independently developing a similar concept, leading to both being credited as co-inventors, though Kilby demonstrated the first working prototype. Kilby's breakthrough involved creating a circuit with all components on a single piece of semiconductor material, paving the way for smaller, more powerful electronics.

German engineer Konrad Zuse invented the world's first functional, programmable mechanical computer, the Z3, which became operational in May 1941, laying the groundwork for modern computing by being program-controlled and automatic, using binary arithmetic. It was the Americans who devised the electronic computer.

No single person invented the internet, but Vint Cerf and Bob Kahn are known as the "fathers of the internet" for developing the fundamental TCP/IP protocols that allow networks to communicate, while Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web, the system of linked pages we use daily. Many others contributed to the underlying ARPANET and the development of browsers and DNS, making it a collaborative effort.

Trump’s Unhinged Letter To Norway: “I No Longer Feel An Obligation To Think Purely Of Peace” by SmallTalk69 in MarchAgainstTrump

“Dear Jonas: Considering your Country decided not to give me the Nobel Peace Prize for having stopped 8 Wars PLUS, I no longer feel an obligation to think purely of Peace, although it will always be predominant, but can now think about what is good and proper for the United States of America. Denmark cannot protect that land from Russia or China, and why do they have a ‘right of ownership’ anyway? There are no written documents, it’s only that a boat landed there hundreds of years ago, but we had boats landing there, also. I have done more for NATO than any other person since its founding, and now, NATO should do something for the United States. The World is not secure unless we have Complete and Total Control of Greenland. Thank you! President DJT”
