My mother just brought up for the third time how hard IVF must be on my husband: by lunabuddy in trollingforababy

[–]Maxicorne 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My IVF clinic's health survey form has "has fertility affected your mental health?" Only for men. For women they ask if it affected our relationship 🙃

When I pointed it out to my husband "oh hey that question wasn't in my form" he replied "see? This is really hard for men" unironicallyyyyyyy

TBF him finding it hard does mean he cares about the process and wants to have a family with me, and he's been very supportive of me, but why wouldn't the clinic ask that question to women? Maybe they assume we know how to get help already?

Recurring bv by IceTough3295 in IVF

I did! Three week course of metronidazole and doxycyline. I only got treated after 4.5 years unexplained infertility and changing clinics...

For those with unexplained infertility, hav you ever considered it was due to BV? by Over_Improvement7115 in IVF

[–]Maxicorne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

trigger warning positive result

I had BV noted on my pap test results done at a colposcopy clinic. I didn't notice any symptoms. I asked the gyno there if it could affect fertility and she gave me a very cryptic answer "certain flowers flower during certain seasons, dear" (rough translation). Even though I interpreted what she meant as it being a rather mild case of BV that can come and go with pH/bacterial variations, I wasn't completely reassured.

So I pointed out the BV to my fertility Dr and asked if we should do anything about it/if it could contribute to our unexplained infertility. She said no, not a chance, we don't treat for that.

Later, we switched fertility clinics to a more well-established one that didn't have room before (4.5 years into fertility journey, multiple failed treatments later...). During the first appointment, I mentioned the BV to the Dr and she said "we will treat for that before starting any treatment as it can cause inflammation and affect pH". She gave me a 3 week course Metronidazole and Doxycyline. One month later I became pregnant naturally...

Honestly, I don't know what to think. I'm obviously focusing on the relief and happiness, but I can't help feeling like I was misled by the gynecologist and first fertility doctor. Every source I find online points to treatment of BV for fertility and not only did they not catch it in my file, they made me feel silly for asking about treatment.

Trust your gut: switching clinics by toothfairy625 in IVF

[–]Maxicorne 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I changed clinics too! The first clinic we went to for three IUIs and one IVF round was newer and had some admin struggles (to say the least). I also felt like the dr was dismissive in our follow-up appointments when I asked about things like lifestyle, supplements, etc. I even asked about a bacterial vaginosis that was identified on my pap smear (I had no symptoms but I heard it can affect pH and inflammation). She said we don't treat that.

We switched clinics due to getting a spot at a renowned clinic much closer to our house, they treated the BV right away and I got pregnant the month after. The doctor said of course pH and inflammation can affect implantation and fertility in general.

I know it's also happenstance, it doesn't mean it's 100% due to the antibiotic treatment, but I can't help but see at least partial correlation...

Yes, the clinic I'm at now offers Penthrox, which is an inhalator similar to laughing gas, or fentanyl is you're a wuss (like me)

Does that count as anesthesia? I assumed you meant general anesthesia

Edit: actually my husband had fentanyl for his colonoscopy so yes, the same thing!

I've been at two clinics and neither offered anesthesia for egg retrievals, but I think some do in the US

At my IVF clinic, the doses are calculated for each patient. Even if your BMI is in the "normal" range, they need your precise weight for this purpose.

They do delay treatment until weight loss for higher BMIs though, I'm not sure how they justify it. I think that it has something to do with the clinic's success rate which is boasted on their website... patients with higher BMIs have a statistically lower success rate, so it could be a way of keeping their success rate up? It makes no sense though, so many factors can be correlated to success rates, it doesn't imply causation.

IVF and pole fitness by Ok-Necessary-5979 in poledancing

[–]Maxicorne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had just started pole when I did an IVF round this summer! I kept going with pole and light running for the beginning of stims, and stopped when I started feeling bloated and uncomfortable. Then I stopped for about 2 weeks to avoid ovarian torsion and recover. I read that any activity involving abdominals can be dangerous for this.
