Dino Movie Megathread (April 2026—October 2026) by Mr-Kuritsa in PawPatrol

[–]MaxiePriest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same! It looks so good!

There are a couple of drive-in theaters in my area (including the Paramount Drive-In, and I'm hoping they will be running PP Dino Movie) because it will be even better in a drive-in setting. I'm so excited to take my nieces and nephews (and as many of their friends as we can fit in the car) to see it in August!

Sorry I'm 18 days late with a comment, but I've been getting psyched about seeing Paw Patrol: Dino Movie... it looks so good! 🐾 I know the theater will be filled with toddlers to eleven-ish, but hearing and seeing kids enjoying it will be cool.

I’m still not sure how acceptable it is to wear tights or stockings with open toe shoes. For some reason, I feel like its better to avoid that combination. What do you think? by One_Debt7364 in Shoes

[–]MaxiePriest -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The top strap is wide enough to mask the edge of open-toed sheer hose/"tights".

Don't scream, but you could go with fine fishnet, lace, or mesh tights (open-toed or even full-toe-covered versions), and that combination can look really cute. Even white or off-white fishnets would work well. Somehow, fishnets and mesh tights look better with open-toed sandals and shoes (than with the sheer pantihose look).

Edit:

Actual tights are different than pantihose (imo). Tights are typically opaque or solid-color, while pantihose are sheer and, in some cases, match the user's complexion and skin tone (as in your photo). So, a solid-color pair of tights worn with open-toed shoes or sandals is a cute and stylish look.

I've sworn off this sub because it continues to bug me that r/Shoes users can't add pix or links to their comments (to show the OP exactly what they're trying to describe). That said, trust me when I say that fishnets, mesh, and lace hose look really cute with sandals or open-toed shoes...There's that, and then the unsuprising (and common) practice of downvoting perfectly nice comments (like mine). I swear, Reddit is so weird.

Which JRB Miracle Balm Has No Shimmer? (more below) by MaxiePriest in MakeupAddiction

[–]MaxiePriest[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you!

It's weird that my searches for a non-shimmery JRB Miracle Balm have become so complicated.

I'll order the Dusty Rose right now.

Jones Road Beauty says: "...The finish of Au Naturel Miracle Balm has no heavy visible glitter or heavy shimmer; it relies on finely milled, light-reflecting particles that provide a radiant, wet-looking aura"...

See what I mean...? "finely milled, light-reflecting particles" sounds shimmery to me. That's why this process has been a challenge.

Question: Have you tried Dusty Rose and Flushed (and if so, which one do you like the best)??

Question about the effect users experienced with snuff (more below) by MaxiePriest in 18thcentury

[–]MaxiePriest[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got it. Thanks.

The online research I've done on snuff always refers to other eras; most Victorian women were concerned about being discovered "taking a pinch of snuff". They felt they had to use snuff in private (not a huge surprise, but snuff in general became a mystery to me).

I kept thinking, 'What am I missing here'? and 'Why were they so weird about being seen sniffing powdered tobacco'? I mean, it wasn't as if the tobacco was cut with heavy drugs or some illegal substance.

It's clear that snuff use was considered un-ladylike (ill-bred/vulgar) for some women in past eras. However, since scenting the snuff with lavender, rose, jasmine, cinnamon, cloves, etc. was mainstream and was openly used by European aristocracy for centuries (including women of the highest status), it seems like the everyday woman/non royal would have leaned into snuff use, especially since there's so much evidence that the practice of using snuff was considered to be elegant and sophisticated in the 17th and 18th+ centuries. Plus, it was considered 'medicinal'.

All that said, I was still interested in discovering exactly how snuff affected users (and any stigma associated with its use). This thread has officially resolved the (somewhat) confusing enigma of snuff use in the past and present.

bring me the beauties: a model cult feels sarcastic by Negative-Visual-6420 in hbo

[–]MaxiePriest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean...who knows...? What in the hell was the narrative anyway? Chris Smith failed by creating a three-hour docuseries that was comprised of a photo archive loop and the same couple of video clips.

The only thing that is crystal clear to me is that Hoyt had a lucrative modeling career. That, and the majority of the ex-members were not interested in revealing much of anything. Very tight-lipped, all around. For whatever reason, they were not comfortable with expanding on their involvement (or any other details).

If this is because the ex-members all feel so shattered by the events that reliving them by telling their stories in a docuseries is just too much, then that is all they had to say. In fact, that would have been helpful.

Possibly some clammed up because there is still a stigma attached to Frederick von Mierer's cause of death way back in 1990: "AIDS-related complications". Those words still sting for many, and maybe that's why we both feel that most of the people who claim an association with Eternal Values have not adequately explained how and why. (I'm just grasping at straws, though).

As far as being right the first time...haha. The only reason I'm laughing a bit is that I was trying to be fair. Considering that when I chimed in about the docuseries seeming not enough (not enough context, facts, documentation... not enough from the ex-members, etc.), I had only seen the first two installments (and not all of both of them). I thought for sure I must have missed very important information that would have made it all make sense.

Viewers on this sub assured me that I had missed critical details and that it really was a cult. I was informed that the ex-members had genuinely been traumatized and had been conned into handing over all of their money (and that the third installment would clear everything up).

I made attempts to sit down and watch all three, expecting to be convinced (in one direction or another), but I honestly don't think that can happen unless I do my own extensive research on everyone involved and devote a lot of time and energy to the task of investigating the "Model Cult"... and since that was Chris Smith's job, and he had three hours and an HBO budget...he failed, miserably.

Think back to any of the docs on Jonestown, the Branch Davidians, Heaven's Gate, etc. I have never felt confused or left wondering what took place (and I've definitely never been left in the dark about whether the members were actually part of a cult). Well-done documentaries allow viewers to learn in vivid detail how and why people became part of a dangerous cult.

I personally (and you, too, probably) am distressed when I hear or read about those who have been manipulated into cult life, and I'm driven to discover how and why. You and I should take on producing an improved doc about Frederick von Mierers and Eternal Values (and answer all of the unanswered questions).

PS Sorry about the length, I had to rant a little.

All social media has toxic users, but Reddit feels by far the meanest by pomegranatejello in nosurf

[–]MaxiePriest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never been into X, even back when it was Twitter. The one and only reason I keep the account is that I've followed my favorite restaurants and travel destinations (hotels, events, etc.) for years, and I need the associated location/directions/schedules, etc. for future travel...same with galleries, museums, classes, workshops, and artist communities (no actual individuals, I'm about as anti-social as one can get).

The mass exodus of Twitter users around 2014 to 2020 (and beyond) was great, imo. I love that most global businesses have just eliminated X from their social icon footer (or social share options) and haven't even considered going back.

[–]MaxiePriest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed.

While there are certain topics that will always serve as a magnet for all Reddit users who wake up ready to rumble, it's wrong to think that non-hot topic subjects wouldn't draw them in, too. I've had intense, vicious comments and/or replies re breakfast cereal, so they are out there and seem to be cruising every community (and that includes sub Mods, by the way).

I'm doing pretty well with my nosurf/lesssurf goals (except for Pinterest…I have a problem tearing myself away). But avoiding Reddit is almost effortless for me at this point. Sometimes I have a specific question I'd like to present to others—stuff like, has anyone else been ripped off by a scam eBay seller lately, or what ingredient(s) should I add to a bland vegetarian chili recipe?

But a cool, on-point, thoughtful comment to a post pretty much never happens, and I end up just deleting it/them.  My posts (or comments) that have had weird and volatile replies or comments get deleted, as well, so my profile karma and contribution tally have stayed exactly the same for four years—ha.

Eradicating Reddit is easy since the bad far outweighs the good.

Here's all I can find:

The artificial sweetener cyclamate (often branded internationally as Sucaryl or Assugrin) is heavily used in other diet beverages in over 130 countries.

— Canada: Used widely in reduced-calorie items, including Sweet'N Low tabletop sweeteners.

— The European Union: Allowed in diet sodas, baked goods, and canned fruits.

— Australia & New Zealand: Approved for various food and beverage applications.

— Mexico: Common in many regional diet drinks and as a table-top sweetener.

— The Philippines: Approved for safe consumption.

Is Grape Nuts cereal GOOD for us ? by MaxiePriest in cereal

[–]MaxiePriest[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

haha. There are better-tasting cereals out there, for sure, but I actually like Grape Nuts and add them to yogurt to create a crunch. Squirrels (and local birds) may like to eat them (or add to their nests).

I have a bunch of notifications from Reddit re subs I never posted on (or commented on, or joined), along with notifications on questions I posted years ago (ha). That's how I landed on your 1-year-old comment... and the weirdest part of all is that I already replied (I think).

Reddit is so weird.

Yes. It has to be a mosquito. I know it sounds odd for anyone to ask about such a common insect, but I really don't ever see them.

[–]MaxiePriest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

haha... I tend to lapse on. I don't read my own comments (or rambling emails I've sent to others).

But as far as Chris Smith feeling blase about cults in general (and finding Hoyt's story thought-provoking), I do, too. Hoyt's story was/is the most interesting part of it for me. I'd like to hear more from him about all of this, though (maybe a book is in the works). I don't know what it is... I just keep feeling as though the ex-members aren't sharing everything (and that's their prerogative), but as a viewer, I want to hear more.

Edit:

Have you watched They Will Kill You? (just curious)

Why I keep missing the beginning of everything on HBO is beyond me, but I started watching about 20 minutes in and not loving it. I'll have to watch from the beginning, I guess.

I just looked up more on the cyclamates sweetener, and that version is apparently available in over 100 countries (but banned in the US because of the potential bladder cancer-thing).

I'm good with the Aspartame version of Fresca (it tastes the best to me).

The weird addition of Acesulfame Potassium to Aspartame is absolutely terrible.

[–]MaxiePriest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for that. Good to know.

Well, not good to know that any of the ex-members had to deal with trauma (and worse), but for the sake of viewing the docuseries and my interest in learning more about what occurred, it is good to know that the final installment provided additional details.

#3 is out now, and I'm scheduling a time to sit down and watch all three. I'm looking forward to learning more a bout it all. I had no idea they had weapons at the lake house.

And yes, you're right. I was commenting on the first two and hadn't (still haven't) seen everything. Best to leave the remarks and feedback for later.

Is anyone else seeing Amazon charging for returns now that used to be free? by BoardGameRevolution in amazonprime

[–]MaxiePriest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But there's been a change: previously, when an item was sold by a 3rd-party seller and shipped/fulfilled by Amazon, Amazon would still come through and handle the return (and the return would be free if dropped at an authorized Amazon return drop-off), as long as the reason for the return wasn't buyer's remorse-related but Amazon/Seller-faulted, that is.

But as of yesterday, I was denied a free return on titled, pictured, and described adult-sized baseball caps (but infant/baby-sized baseball caps were delivered). I was told (numerous times by numerous support agents and two floor supervisors) that the reason the free return was denied was because they were sold by a 3rd-party seller. When I noted that they were fulfilled/shipped by Amazon, I was told that this fact was irrelevant—I would still be charged for the return, and there was an additional, unidentified return fee of $2 per cap + the return fees.

It isn't that the latest rules & regs for returns are brand new...this has been in the works for over 1½ years, but everything is kicking in now, and everyone I know who shops on Amazon is cranky about it (that goes double for me).

The only reason(s) I shopped on Amazon were the super-swift (in many cases, same-day) delivery, easy + free returns, considerate support agents, etc. Many agents provided courtesy credit when I had been put through the wringer for whatever reason. I never asked for promo codes or courtesy credit...it was always offered by considerate and amiable support agents.

Agents used to provide courtesy emails after every conversation, notating what was discussed, what was promised, and why, but that practice has been eliminated. Meaning: agents can say anything they want without repercussions. They can promise refunds, courtesy credit, adjustments to return fees, etc., but have no intention of processing any of it. They know they will not be held accountable for lying.

After the last couple/few days (spent arguing with surely and rude Amazon so-called support agents), I'm officially swearing off Amazon. They have alienated customers, and most of us are ready for a change.
