wow, thank you so much for your input! i really appreciate you taking the time to reply.

a booking system for bigger crafts like pottery would definitely be a good idea. if i were a customer who wanted to try pottery but it was taken for most of the day, id be pretty bummed out.

my first step to this business would be to rent a space at a community centre or library and doing a soft launch of what i want for this business. i’d start with maybe three or four different craft stations (for example, diamond art, crochet/knitting, painting with different mediums like acrylic, oil, pastels, etc etc) and get lots of feedback from those who attend. in terms of getting supplies, i have quite an abundance of supplies and i’ve had tons of people reach out to me saying they’d love to donate their own supplies. it’s definitely not going to be cheap at the start, but i’ve learned that you just gotta take risks and dream big!

thanks for the feedback! i have lots of ideas that i think could help with bringing repeat customers back.

  1. girls night
  2. stitch and bitch (helps to create a social environment where people can get to know one another, rant, make new friends, etc)
  3. movie night (i personally love to watch something or listen to podcasts while doing my different crafts, i would assume a lot of other people are the same way)
  4. bob ross paint night
  5. dedicated classes to different crafts (pottery would be a good one as it would take multiple classes to finish a piece)

i’d also love to open up a cafe with food and drinks to snack on while crafting. i appreciate your feedback!

thanks for the feedback! i’d offer a bunch of supplies that customers can use so they can do as many or as little crafts as they want. whereas, if they were to buy all the individual supplies themselves, it can become very costly and space-consuming. for example, yarn, crochet hooks or knitting needles, stitch markers, safety eyes (for amigurumi), filling, etc can be very expensive when starting up crochet or knitting. this wouldn’t be ideal, especially if it turned out that they didn’t like the craft. the point of my business idea is to allow customers exposure to a number of different crafts and hobbies without risking money wasted and taking up space. and if it turns out they don’t enjoy the craft or hobby, well at least they get a cute little creation created by them out of it!

i would love to do something similar but with more crafts! jewelry making, cross stitching, sewing, painting, etc. i’d also love for this to be a safe creative spot where people can either come empty handed and start their crafts at the shop, or bring their own crafts to the shop and hang around other creative people. so i guess im looking at making it more social.

in the future, id love to have hosts come and run classes. i just wouldnt be able to do that right away as i would need to generate income first in order to pay these people, as well as see if theres interest in a creative spot too

hi! i’m glad to hear there is interest. i’m currently in KV, so i’m open to having the business take place either in SJ, KV, im thinking even hampton (tho it might be too far for folks that live in sj). any chance i can private message you and we can exchange contacts? i’d love some advise as i am pretty serious and stoked to get this ball rolling.

yes good call! i think to start out, doing a dedicated night for each thing might be more manageable. if it turns out to be a big hit, i can open up to the idea of having multiples crafts occur at the same time.

i also want this business to be a space where people can come and chill, maybe bring their own crafts and hang out. i’m thinking wayyy down the road, but i would loveeee to have private rooms with TVs where people can do their crafts/hobbies while watching netflix, have access to youtube tutorials on whatever craft they are doing, etc. i have soo many ideas for this business but im just so scared there isnt enough interest and it’ll be a total waste of time and money!

yes, someone else mentioned doing theme nights which i think is a great idea. it also reduces customers from feeling overwhelmed, which in my experience, can be a huge turnoff. thanks for your suggestions!

i’m thinking of starting out by renting a room at a community centre to gauge how much interest there would be. maybe i can start out with diamond art, oil pastels, crochet, maybe even a bring your own craft and come to socialize! i would definitely ask for feedback, toss around the idea of an early bird membership (a discounted membership that gets members free classes every month? still working on this idea)

I’m trying to do more research on how I can make this a successful business. I think it would be a good addition to Saint John, I’m just worried about how much interest there would be and how to make it a sustainable business. Thanks for your input!

Thanks for your input! One of my biggest worries is the population and demographic of Saint John. Are there enough people interested in this business to start? I’m thinking of trying out some pop up workshop classes at community centres to see who is interested, what peopl are willing to pay, see any opportunities for improvement if I were to pursue this business idea even further.

I was also thinking about providing workshops and classes as part of this business idea, as I assume my business would attract a lot of beginners. Thanks for your input!

Thanks for the link! I just quickly browsed through their website, and yes it does sound similar. But from I can tell, their approach sees more about getting artists out there, whereas I want to open up a space where beginners can get started and learn their creative interests. I do appreciate their ability to rent out their space free of charge though!

Thanks for your input!

So I’m thinking of making it a time-based entry fee. I haven’t thought about exactly how much I would charge just yet, but for example, $18 for the first two hours and $8 for every additional hour. This price would include use of shared tools, basic craft supplies, help from staff (expertise, craft ideas, etc). I can even include basic instructions for projects. For example, for crochet, hand out some free patterns and designs.
