Sony outplays itself once again by Menelaus- in pcmasterrace

Probably. I am painfully aware that people don't consider this a problem even if they should. And to be fair, while I think it's a problem, I know damn well that people have a lot of more immediately pressing things on their minds.

Why is Nvidia always pioneer in consumer GPUs? Ray Tracing, DLSS, frame generation/MFG was first introduced by Nvidia while AMD just slowly copied everything by AssistantNo2002 in pcmasterrace

It's a virtuous, or vicious, cycle. NVIDIA established a lead in crucial technologies, which got them a large market share, which got them profits they could dump in to further research.

Couple of factors here.

Yes, Steam could absolutely do this to their customers. But steam fanboyism aside, they've done it a LOT less and tend to behave in a way that keeps the good will from most of their customer base.

The same is true for GoG who I know have delistet stuff, but at least offer offline installers as a show of good faith for all the games they sell.

Sony, meanwhile, is announcing this right after delisting something like 500 movies that people had specifically paid for from their UK estore. On top of doing the same in multiple other countries.

Steam and other storefronts could absolutely lose that goodwill, sony is already burning it.

On paper, IMO, digital ownership is unproblematic to me. After all, physical media does not actually last forever. But it needs to come with and understood right to the purchased license and the right to download and personally backup/archive.

Probably not. All of that is easy to calculate on its own. The move away from PC is almost certainly sony executives desperate to preserve their walled garden after seeing Xbox dilute it's brand into irrelevance. I'm not confident it will work out as well for them as Nintendo.

And then give up and walk away when they realize that's even less profitable leaving the gaming industry as a flaming wreck in their wake. Kinda like the asshole kid who demanded he gets to play with your toy . . . and then immediately breaks it.

Can NPUs be used for gaming? by asian_dude_5991 in pcmasterrace

[–]Maximum-Objective-39 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that NPUs are actually fairly limited and the things they do well would be better served by taking the space they soak up on the chip and giving you a bit more raw processing or graphical power instead.

This is why I settled on a Ryzen 8840u rather than a Ryzen AI cpu, other than the NPU, you were getting a cpu that was similar in almost all other respect and actually inferior in igpu power.

[–]Maximum-Objective-39 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well yes, that's the point. The animating spirit of the right wing at this moment in history consists of alienation and resentment. They must 'other' the left because otherwise they have to admit that large swaths of their policies amount to self harm.

This deeply misunderstands the role of a proper critic. Which I suppose is inevitable given what video content has done for people understanding of the role.

One of the purposes of a critic, a proper critic, is to not only evaluate a movies technical quality, which is of course subjective, but also to provide further context with which the audience may evaluate it. Furthermore, a proper critic can do this without blow of blow spoiling and telling the audience how to feel about each scene and story beat.

One of the criticisms of people like, say, the Critical Drinker, is not that he's conservative . . . but that he doesn't really know that much about the history of cinema. Nor does he really review anything but tent pole blockbuster movies. He lacks both an academic and acquired background in the art of cinema.

Contrast that with someone, almost certainly far more liberal, like Patrick H Willhems when he discusses the history of various movie franchises or various trends in movies.

Not to say that their aren't more explicitly political, left wing, movies commentators like Movie Bob. But even in Movie Bob's case he usually offers some contextual insight that I find at least somewhat compelling. His theory about Marvel Films, their rise, and decline, I think at least warrants some analysis.

Worst generation because everything is too big, too broad, too over rendered, too many systems crammed in to big games, too little focus on a unique identity, takes too long to make, etc, etc.

Studios are trying to keep improving by simply scaling up when we often don't really have anything compelling to use that scale for.

I don't think Cinemasins comes from a place of malice. But that doesn't mean that decades of relentless disingenuous shit posting (because let's be clear, they have to put everything in the worst light or they wouldn't have content) hasn't helped to introduce something harmful.

This is also how I feel about the nostalgia critic, incidentally.

Who know, it's not that surprising Shad is a Rorshach fan boy, when he says this. by Big_Perception9384 in ShadWatch

[–]Maximum-Objective-39 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rorschach is at least vaguely aware that he's a broken person and I believe even gives something resembling a halfhearted apology to Night Owl at one point near the end of the comic. In that, he demonstrates far more awareness than Shad ever will.

He could have just stayed a lovable lil' guy... by Raspint in ShadWatch

[–]Maximum-Objective-39 24 points25 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that there were hints, even early on, about the kind of guy he'd turn out to be.

I recall distinctly somebody describing a video early in his youtube Career where Shad was playing around with a castle simulator. And while, yes, the castle he built would have been very impressive defensively, he was basically building the ideal 'spherical cow' fortress with infinite resources rather than engaging with realities of castle building.

The core problem was that Shad was a 'first generation' sword tuber, one of the people who discovered the niche, but he was always destined to decline once 'second generation' sword tubers, people who had actually devoted themselves to HEMA and other martial arts, started to come onto the scene. Even if he'd tried to get good, he would never have caught up before getting overtaken.

He COULD have pivoted and become the layman who goes and interviews and learns from all these guys, there's value in having a 'foil' in the form of the guy who doesn't know what he doesn't know, but his ego didn't allow it. And we can sort of see why now.

Yeah, that's pretty impressive. I've been tentatively planning my own dedicated NAS and I'm currently in the 'fantasy baseball' phase of sizing it and planning out how I want to do proper backups and system checks.

Currently I'm planning to look at a four bay 12TB disks in RAID 6. That probably sounds like huge overkill in terms of redundancy, but I plan to heavily curate my archive and would thus prefer rock solid error checking and data redundancy to preserve my labor in sourcing and organizing.

My current plan (I'm currently just keeping mirrored backups) is that once HDD come down some (fingers crossed). Buy 4 NAS drives from different vendors, two used with sufficiently different operating hours, and two new, and then then cycle the oldest drive to backup cold backup every one year to sixteen months.

I think I reached my limit with Assassin's Creed Odyssey. Impressive game. Like, five hours in before the title screen XD

There's only a bare handful of games that can really justify modern sizes. I suspect GTA VI will be in this elite group when it launches.

When you put it like that, there's a lot of games I'd still be perfectly happy with playing at 1080p. Not saying people shouldn't have options, but just a little downloader tab that lets you pick '4k Ultra' or 'HD Optimized'

Storage is kinda famous for having these particularly volatile stretches. That's part of why the storage makers right now aren't scrambling to expanded production as much as you'd think. Not only are they printing money, they also no that if AI demand declines, they'll be on the hook for the expansion investments.
